NBR - Is this creepy and/or insensitive?

A bunch of our family is flying out here for K's graduation so we've reserved four hotel rooms for everyone to crash in.  Well.....K got to thinking and was wondering if it was appropriate to ask if we could rent the house next door for everyone to stay in. This is the house of the neighbor that just passed away.  Her kids are going to sell the house but that won't happen for awhile.  Our family had all met the neighbor and liked her so I know they would respect her things and her place.

I told K to wait a few weeks to see if the kids start packing the place up or not. I truly feel her son would be fine with it but it still feels a bit insensitive.

What say you?

  • Perhaps get a feel for their timeline and if they don't seem in a hurry then you could ask. But I agree - it is sensitive territory.

  • Honestly...

I would be upset if my Mom's  next door neighbor (who I adore) asked to rent her house shortly after her passing.

I will say though that I am a HUGE MAMA'S girl (i.e. selling the house would be hard for me).

This is definitely a sensitive area.

  • I totally get it.  I don't get a sense though that the family is attached to the house.  Her daughter asked me at the Shiva (2 days after her mom's passing) if I knew anyone who wanted to buy the house.

Like I said, I told K to just wait and see how things are in a few weeks.  Having the family right next door would be perfect but not worth hurting feelings or making our relationship with the neighbor's kids strained.

  • I would say that if the daughter has already asked you if you know anyone who wanted to buy the house that they're probably not the kind of people to get offended or upset by you asking about renting it for a few days. that's just my opinion, though.
