Lo has had chronic double ear infections for the past month and a half. We've tried amoxicillin, augmentin, and yesterday she got her first out of a series of three shots of Rocephin. She's got an appointment this morning for her 2nd so I'll ask her pedi as well but she woke up this morning limping. The injection site is not red or swollen but she's barely putting any pressure on that leg and is now scooting on the floor on her butt. I hate she's going through all this. Our next step is to get tubes put in her ears. Has anyone has good success with the shots and were able to avoid the tubes?

Re: Any experience with the Rocephin shot?
My DD has had the rocephin series of shots- twice. However, she didn't experience any side effects. It did clear up the ear infections quickly, but they eventually came back.
She is on her second set of tubes, and it's amazing how much they help. But you may want to consult a chiro first. I have heard stories from friends that rave over the chiro's work, and that the ear infections are kept at bay.
Good Luck!

My son had a ton of ear infections and we never did the shots but had rounds and rounds of antibiotics. We eventually got tubes and it was the best thing we ever did. They were put in when he was just a year old and he has not had an ear infection since.
The procedure was quick and I think my husband and I were more stressed about it then my son was. He was back to his old self within a couple of hour after the surgery.
Good Luck.
I've only given adults Rocephin injects. It hurts. I usually gave them with a hefty dose of Lidocaine in the syringe as well. Not a fun injection to get.
Good luck and I hope your LO can avoid tubes.
We skipped the shots and went right for Tubes. BEST DECISION ever! She hasn't had any infections and no more constant medication. I didn't like constantly having her on meds. She is talking better and is a much happier girl now that she has the tubes.
Her getting the tubes took a whole 15 mins from start to finish and after a nap she was back to her old self.
The soreness from Rocephin shots was more painful for DD than recovering from tubes. Both times.
It would be great if no babies ever had to suffer from ear infections, but IMO, tube surgery is far preferable to round after round of antibiotics. I hope your LO feels better.
Rocephin shots HURT. They just do. They are one of the most painful shots that healthcare providers can give. In fact, every place I've ever worked that we give Rocephin shots we mix it with lidocaine so that it hopefully reduces the pain. It is VERY likely that your DD is limping because it hurts. Rocephin shots make flu shots look like nothing!
A few things you could do: put a warm pack to the area, let her relax as much as she wants but make sure to use the muscle. The more she moves the muscle the less sore it will be. (Even if you just sit there and move it for her-she doesn't have to put weight on the leg, but maybe you sit with her and do like bicycle kicks with the leg very gently.)
Also, it may be time for ear tubes. If your pedi hasn't brought it up yet I would go ahead and ask. My pedi was resistant but after 6 rounds of antibiotics in 5 months and a secondary infection because of the antibiotics I convinced her it was time. BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE FOR DD! The procedure really is very minimal and instantly fixed DD's ears. No infections since!
Hooray!
Good luck and I hope your DD feels better soon!
Thank you all for the replies. We go for her third and final shot this afternoon. Her pediatrician has already told us that if these don't clear up we will go for the tubes. He said he really doesn't want to do them because "ear infection season" is almost over. I'll be thrilled to have her get them if it means she can stop suffering! She woke up at 2am with a 102.0 fever. Poor baby just can't catch a break.
