How do you take your fiber?

Can I just say that I HATE taking fiber? argh.. I would imagine I'm not the ONLY one taking it around here and I'm wondering what works best for you?

My dr recommended Citrucel because it doesn't cause extra gas... so I purchased a bottle of the powder. My problem is that I have to choke it down in a glass of orange juice just to keep my gag reflex at bay. It gets all chunky (kinda like orange juice pulp but way worse ewww). Do you take the chewy tablets? use a different brand powder? is gas terrible if you use a different brand? have you found a way to make it more enjoyable to consume?

I'm going to try to finish this bottle of Citrucel that I have since i paid the 10 bucks for it (yes I'm a bit of a tight wad) but i really dread my nightly fiber remedy and want to try something else ASAP!

  • I have the Metamucil capsules. I tried the powder kind and boy that was awful and after a minute it turns into this horrible slush. Oh I also read somewhere that celery and broccoli help, I don't know if its true but I still like Celery so I eat it anyways.

    I also take the Metamucil capsules.  They're not huge, and honestly, I don't think they taste like anything for the 2 seconds I have to keep them in my mouth before washing them down.  You might want to give it a try!

    I have a bowl of Fiber One cereal and an apple every day for breakfast. If it has been a couole days, I will eat a Fiber Plus cereal bar. The Caramel Chocolate Fudge or whatever tastes like a Samoa!

  • If you're asking because fiber helps you poo, then I have to say my secret is a half or full cup of coffee.  Works every time Wink...but like Mrs. Ike said, Fiber One is loaded with fiber, and I used to eat that stuff all the time when I was on Weight Watchers.  And there are Double Fiber English muffins that I like for breakfast sometimes.  Since I've been craving fruit a lot lately, I try to pick fruits that have some fiber in them and supplement them with a fiber-fortified starch.  I haven't tried the powder supplements yet, even though I've been eying them for a while...the clumping sounds gross, though, so maybe I'll stay away, haha.

  • I also go the Fiber One bar route.  And eat fruit everyday.  Usually apples and strawberries.  Also drink lots of water.  If you increase your fiber intake but do not increase your water intake, you'll make the problem WORSE.  I also eat a vegan bran muffin every day for breakfast.

  • I'm really impressed that many of you are modifying your diets or at least focusing on some fiber rich items!! I NEED to follow your lead and make eating a priority. Life seems to get in the way my meals which is why fiber supplements have been my "go-to" thus far. Thanks for the feedback girls!

  • I take Fibercon capsules. It works pretty well. I take 1-2 caps per day. I like that I can take them as a pill form. I can't do the powder.

  • I don't like to take medication; I just eat lots of fruits & vegetables.  That's my usual diet anyway as I'm a flexitarian.  I also add a tablespoon of wheat bran to my breakfast (consists of fruit, plain yogurt, and homemade granola).  The wheat bran helps a lot and I can't really taste it once it's mixed in the bowl.

  • I have been having apple cravings.  I eat about 3 apples a day and take my PN vitamin with apple juice.  It definitely seems to be doing the trick

  • I tried a fiber-one bar and I will never eat one again. The gas was unbearable!!!! I have to admit that it DID work though.... but I'll probably try something else. 
  • I try to eat a lot of fruit and whole grains on a daily basis, but if I'm having an issue, beans pretty much always do the trick. I mixed a can of refried beans with salsa and cheese and eat that with tortilla chips if I need some extra fiber.

  • I try to eat a fiber one bar every day & make sure to eat fruit, too!

    It takes a few days for your body to get used to, but if you continue to eat one every day, it regulates itself ;)

  • Honestly I just try to eat a high fiber diet and I've been fine so far - I only eat whole grains, brown rice, etc. and lots of fruits and veggies. I think that's the easiest way to do it.

  • These days, ANYWAY I CAN DIGEST IT!  The "backup" is insane!

    I do Coffee first thing (just one cup) with the BelVita Fiber breakfast bars.

    Then Greek Yogurt WITH granola and then finally a mid morning Apple.

    If still no results, when I get home, I take a capful of Myralax.

    I have never in my life been this out of whack with the inability to go (sorry TMI).

    Ahh...the joys of pregnancy! But the result will be AWESOME!! :-)

    I have taken these before, too.  I would take one at night before bed.  They work great, and I never noticed excess gas with them. 

    For me these days it's not much of a problem because this baby LOVES fruit!  My afternoon sweet snack is a Fiber One bar.  I also love Fiber Plus cereal.
