Postpartum Depression

From IF boards to PPD. What to do now?

I could not get pg for about 3 years, had pp with my first - was fine after my 2nd until about 2-3 months. It seems so unfair that I would be so unhappy after trying so hard to get pg in the first place. Now, after being on antidepressants for over a year, still miserable as ever and starting  to question why I wanted to become a mother in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids and put on a happy face for them daily, but I am just. so. unhappy. Mostly all of the time. There are maybe 2 days out of the month where I am actually enjoy being a mom and enjoy the daily grind with the babies. What else do I do after the antidepressants don't work!?

  • Have you tried therapy?  This is coming from a PPD survivor and a Psychotherapist ;)

  • I tried once and did not like the man, and thought he did not like me either and never went back. What type of dr should I speak to? A psycologist or psychiatrist? Do they all just sit there and let you talk the entire time?
  • I am starting a mindfulness Stress Reduction class starting next week. I have a lot of hope for what that class will bring to my life.

Do you exercise? If not, exercise is one of the best treatments for depression and anxiety.

Try out new therapists. I "fired" one therapist because she just wasn't meeting my needs. Find someone you feel is therapeutically aligned with what you want, look up their training. Etc.

Things can get better and they will!! Don't give up!

A Psychiatrist will prescribe you meds but is likely not trained in Psychotherapy, which is what you probably need.

You'll want to find a licensed professional counselor or social worker (LPC or LCSW) and the easiest way to do that is www.psychologytoday.com - use the zip code search tool.

A good therapist will listen and offer input in a balanced manner.  You'll know when someone is the right fit. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Good therapy can change your life - trust me.
