So I'm normally a lurker but I have a question about gassiness related to oversupply. I know I have a forceful letdown/oversupply and only offer one side per feeding. During the day, LO seems fine but at night time, particularly early morning (4am-7am) LO is so gassy that he'll only sleep if he's in bed with me and I constantly lift his legs. Is this related to the OS issue? I always use the side lying position at night, and he always falls asleep at the breast. Is it possible that he's getting too much foremilk as he's falling asleep before finishing, and that's what's causing the gassiness? I know he could sleep longer stretches at night, but the gas always wakes him up. Any advice? TIA!
ETA: I also give him gas drops with each night feeding, not sure how much it helps.
Re: Those with oversupply, come in.
i found that when i had oversupply, the gas was building up throughout the day and by the time it got to be night, his belly was so bloated. i did the leg exercises throughout the day to try to get some of it out before it got too bad at night.
i didn't have good luck with mylicon or gripe water, but you can give some of that before one of the night feedings.
maybe try nursing him a little more upright so the forceful letdown doesn't make him choke on too much milk at once. that might help. and keep him upright as much as you can when he's awake during the day so he can further burp up air.
At your LO's age, my DS needed to be held upright and burped for 10-15 minutes before being laid down or he was too gassy. I would get up, change diaper, feed and hand him off to DH, who would burp and simultaneously rock back to sleep. Being held upright helped immensely with the gas issues.
I also agree with doing the leg exercises throughout the day, and throughly burping throughout the day so there's no buildup. I found that putting DS in my Moby wrap after feedings and just walking/bouncing around the house while doing other things kept him entertained, helped burp, and let me get things done so I didn't feel like all I ever did was the change/feed/burp cycle.
