Breech labor ?

I have a question for STM that had breech babies, or FTM with outside babies after being breech. If you went into labor naturally, how did your labor start? I'm just wondering how different labor is with a breech baby.

Here's what's happening with me. LO has been breech for the past 4 weeks, possibly sooner, but he was definitely head down at 30 weeks. His butt is against my cervix, with legs crossed. I have a scheduled c-section planned for April 9th. My doctor won't do a version because baby's head is right next to the placenta. So far, I had one full night of mild contractions (starting about 2 hours after some sexy time), which died down after a warm bath. Since then, I've just had braxton hicks type tightening. I was hoping to go for a long walk yesterday to get things moving, but my doctor wants me to take it easy... I think she doesn't want labor starting before the scheduled c-section.

So what was your experience (what symptoms, water breaking, lost mucus plug?) if you went into labor with a breech baby?

Re: Breech labor ?

  • Have you tried spinning babies or chiropractic care?

Also, compared to your scheduled csection, when is your due date? Babies have been known to flip days before labor, or DURING labor. I would not consent to an unnecessary csection before 42 weeks.

BTDT.. csections are AWFUL. The recovery is miserable, post op is miserable, breastfeeding until you heal is more difficult, more painful(baby kicking your incision = OUCH!)... and I'd avoid that at all cost by giving baby every second up to the very last to turn.

I'm due 4/14, so I'll be 39 weeks 2 days. I've decided to trust my doctor's suggestion. I completely believe in being your own advocate, but I also believe she is looking out for both LO and my best interest. It's her opinion that the baby is breech for a reason (umbilical cord too short to turn or head/shoulders too big for my pelvic cavity). On top of this, LO has measured very large on all ultrasounds. I've decided to look at the c-section as positively as I can. I understand it's a major surgery, but with one week until the surgery, I don't need to hear how terrible it's going to be. I would not have chosen this, but I'm going to be positive about it.

My question was how labor has started for anyone here who had a breech baby and didn't make it to the scheduled c-section.

  • dd2 was breech- my water broke at 38 weeks 4 days.

as far as pp goes with the c/s are terrible- pfft. mine was cake. my water broke at 9.30, dd was born at 3.30 so I was in labor (very very mild though) for a few hours. I was up, showered and walking around before noon. so, no not all c/s are horrible terrible etc. I would have no problem having a RCS this time if I have to ( I am trying for a vbac but honestly if I have another c/s I don't care. it's scheduled for next wednesday if I don't go into labor on my own)

Also though- while it is slim, my dd actually flipped breech either the day she was born or the day before. I had an appointment and she was head down then 2 days later when my water broke- surprise! she's breech. so you may still have a chance

C sections can be awful but recovery isn't that bad. I had trouble getting around for 4-5 days but was good after that. Also, I had absolutely no problems with breast feeding etc.

Thank you, that makes me feel better. And was your LO footling? I heard that makes it more likely for water to break.

Great to hear you had a good experience. Man, I'm wondering if I'll be one of you guys who's water breaks first! I would love for little man to make another flip on his own before next week, that would be a wonderful surprise.

My baby was transverse, I went in for a version on March 7th and it was unsuccessful, she flipped right back and went footling breech.  We had a scheduled c-section for March 16th (right at 38 weeks due to severe edema and pre-eclampsia), I was put on bed rest and lost my plug on March 9th, thought nothing of it because I was going to have  her in a week anyway.  On March 13th I woke up at 4am to my water breaking, and I had cord prolapse.  In hindsight, I was probably having contractions but for me it just felt like a dull back ache and I attributed it to being on bed rest and my back hurting.  I had to have an emergency c-section.  The c-section was not as bad as I thought it would be, there is a c-section board that you can go and get some advice.  I did have to get a cathear (sp?) and lay flat for a little while after the surgery.  The major issue I had thru the whole process was that my legs swelled worse than they had before, but that all went away about a week.  Just be sure to take your pain meds before it gets to hurting and do walk as soon as you are able.  I have a tendancy to over do things and I have had to be careful to not lift things.  Good Luck to you and don't let anyone scare you about a c-section.
