Eczema

Does anyone's LO have eczema?  DS has patches all over his body:(  My pedi told me to put hydrocortizone on the parts that become really inflammed 3x per day, otherwise to use Aquafor.  I wash all his clothes in Dreft, I already eat a dairy-free diet (he's breast fed) and avoid citrus and lots of nuts, and I use hypo-allergenic products on him.  Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to help?

I have been bathing him daily (and moisturizing the h*ll out of him afterwards) and I've read conflicting things about that - some sources say the daily bath can be helpful b/c eczema is an irritation/allergic reaction, and some sources say dry skin can exaserbate it.  What has your pedi said about this?

Re: Eczema

  • DD had really bad eczema when she was little.  We tried everything and honestly, not much helped.  For a while the aveeno eczema lotion seemed to help, but only for a short time.  We put a lot of aquaphor on her at night, which kept it manageable.  The good news is, she outgrew it before she turned 1 (can't remember exactly what age).

  • DS had it this winter (appeared when he got his first cold, but stuck around for a while).  We switched to a bath EO night, and only used soap EO bath.  Pedi said for baths that use soap, wait to the last minute to use the soap, rinse and get him out ASAP....no playtime in soapy water.  We also lathered up with Aquaphor before bed every night and when it was bad, at every diaper change too.  We also switched to only cotton pajamas and that helped too.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • We use the hydrocortizone on the bad spots, Curel Eczema lotion daily on his whole body.  Pedi suggested to switch to regular old Dove bar or liquid (soap free) (we were using J&J head to toe all over)

  • We have avoided anything with fragrance (which is often in "hypo-allergenic" lotions and such for babies).  The best thing we have found is to use Aveeno products...the body wash and the cream with the dark blue cap.  And we treat with Aveeno hydrocortizone for a flare-up and also vaseline and again I make sure the vaseline is the unscented kind.

DS has it, but not terribly. I had it really bad as a kid, and I still do. These are some of the things we did-

ALL cotton only. He breaks out badly from polyester. He has three sheets, and they are all 100% cotton, but one is organic cotton and verrrry soft. But I noticed he gets it on his face if he uses the sheets that are not organic cotton. So I only use that one now. It almost feels like flannel.

My pedi said not to use Dreft. She told me to use Tide Free&Clear, which is what I have always used for myself. Dreft has both dyes and perfumes in it, I think.

My pedi told me not to use J&J. same thing about the dyes and perfumes. We use Cetaphil- or the CVS generic. I even wash his hair with it. I think that has made the biggest difference.

I heard exactly what you did about the bathing frequency. My pedi even said there are two schools of thought on it. I bathe DS every other night. We don't submerge him. I heard that can bother eczema. Make sure the water isn't too hot.

I use Aquaphor all over him right after the bath, while his skin is 'thirsty' for the moisture. I put it on his cheeks at night.

I noticed he would get it bad around his ankles where his socks are. So I went up a size in socks and it went away.

    GL!

  • Baths every other night and Aquaphor after. Pedi said to let the baby air dry as much as you can, don't rub or even pat with the towel. And you can/should put the Aquaphor on slightly moist skin. DS's eczema is worst in the winter--in the summer when he gets sweater/dirtier from playing outside, we do baths every night again. His eczema has also gotten a lot better as he gets older.
After 7 failed IUIs, IVF w/ ICSI worked!!

I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.

And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!

  • DS has it on his back. We used Triple Cream paste and I put it on every day twice per day. It took probably 3 months of doing this before I saw improvement. Our pedi said it's just dry skin and unless it's red or irritated not to use cortizone because it's a steroid.
  • When we switched from that Johnson's crap to Aveeno baby wash/shampoo, Annika's eczema all but disappeared. Never even tried their lotion. She still gets dry patches on her knees and elbows occasionally, but that's easily managed with Aquaphor. Before, it was all over her arms and legs.
