DH turns the big 3-0 this year, and I'm kinda sorta addicted to surprise parties. I have the place, and I think I figured out the perfect day. Two of his childhood friends have expressed an interest in coming out to visit us, and I am going to send them messages to see if I can coordinate their visits to join us for the festivities. Do any of you have advice for planning a large scale party? It's not until June, but I want to get the ball rolling now so I'm not trying to pull it all together last minute.

Re: Large scale surprise party
I'm throwing a surprise birthday party too. It's a 60th birthday party for my mom! It's not until July but I've been planning since I've been on medical leave. Because like you I don't want to be planning at the last minute. I would say the key is super organization. I've become seriously anal with planning this party to make sure it's a surprise and I think I'm driving my husband crazy!!! Hee hee.. Good luck and have fun planning.
I threw a large surprise party for dh's 30th. In NYC, we don't host kings in our homes, so I rented a private room in a bar.
It was open bar, but I didn't do food. It started on the later side 9:30. So I did booze and cupcakes. A lot of dh's friends came in from out of town, as did his parents.
It was actually really expensive, but a lot of that is manhattan in general. Dh loved it so much. He was shocked, and cried when he saw it was for him. GL!!!
I haven't planned a big party like that but I have thrown a few surprise parties and the hardest part it keeping it a secret. Things like sending invitations, getting RSVPs, paying for things on your credit card.... all need to be kept under wraps. Try creating a new email address or having all the RSVP's come to your friend or mom, so you're not having awkward conversations with your DH. My DH had a surprise for my 30th and I kind of caught on b/c he was acting really weird. He planned to have my parents and sister fly in for the weekend, and he was changing the sheets in the guest room and cleaning the house.... he's NEVER done stuff like that. Just pay attention to things that you're doing that are out of the ordinary.
How fun to have his friends come in town!!! That will be the best part for him because it will be totally unexpected
