Question about exercise and pregnancy symptoms

Does anyone know if you remain pretty active during pregnancy if some of the common pregnancy symptoms seem to be less noticeable?  I am currently training for a half marathon and am getting a little worried because I'll be 10 weeks this week, but have few pregnancy symptoms (hungry every couple hours, nauseous -- only every once in awhile though, very tired, and a little on the grouchy side).  I'm also still able to wear my normal pants.  With this being my 2nd pregnancy, I figured I'd be breaking out the maternity pants much sooner.  Any insight?

Re: Question about exercise and pregnancy symptoms

  • I was about to ask this same thing. I am not training for a half marathon, but I do notice that when I exercise (crossfit), my nausea seems to subside a little. I haven't gained any weight but I don't anticipate gaining until 2nd tri, when I started to gain with LO #1.

  • I dont think the active vs. common symptoms have any relation. I only say that because I think if that was common, most women would be training for a marathon rather than having marathon sessions with the toilet.

This is my 2nd pregnancy as well and I think my lack of symptoms are more from the fact that I am so distracted with school, work, and LO, that I really havent paid much attention. With my first I was in maternity clothes nearly immediately due to bloat. This time I am wearing my skinny jeans without a problem. My due date is a total guess at this point as I only vaguely remember when my last period was, but I know that I am at least 7 weeks

  • I have stayed pretty active and the only time I am not nauseous when I'm working out. You would think it would be motivation to work out several times a day...not so much

  • I'm not sure if exercising improves symptoms. You might just be very lucky. I know when I exercise (I teach cardio-kickboxing) I get very nauseated.

  • The only time I am not nauseous is when I'm teaching my group fitness classes.  I teach Bodypump and Spin.  After I'm done I'm completely exhausted and usually take a good nap.  After that, I am very nauseous through the rest of my waking hours.  I'm sure the marathon training is keeping your weight/bloat and other lack of symptoms completely under control!  Enjoy it!!!
  • I don't think there's a correlation between exercise and pregnancy symptoms--aside from weight gain, of course :)  And it's true that exercise can increase energy whether you're pregnant or not, though I haven't notice that I'm any less tired since I started working out again.

Just consider yourself lucky you're not dealing with the dreaded m/s or bloat and good luck with your half!  I can't believe I ran one two months ago.  Now I can barely drag my butt off the sofa to go for a walk ;)

  • I'm also much more nauseous/exhausted after working out.  Also, one of the fittest women I know had about the worst morning/all-day sickness I've ever heard of, poor thing!

Grr, you're lucky - my doctor put the kabash on half marathons (despite that's my normal level of fitness)!

This is advice I (personally) probably wouldn't follow.  My doc said not to worry about any exercise granted I feel ok to do it.

But, I don't think excersie curbs symptoms - I just did a 5K on Saturday and I still have m/s, heartburn, and mild constipation.  If only it did!!

And, my last pregnancy, I had pretty much ZERO symptoms except a growing belly.  :)  Til 3rd tri, when heartburn came on in full force...

  • I have been working out at 70% of what I was doing.... I heard its best to "maintain" what you were doing before - but not add anything new or start new crazy goals...
