Cloth Diapering

Diaper rash - Please help.

Hi ladies,

I'm a FTM and we just started using GMD unbleached prefolds and thirsties covers about a week ago on our newborn baby girl.  For the past couple of days she has had some redness on her vagina and part of her bottom.  We've been using CJ's Butter but it hasn't cleared up.  We're using Charlie's  Soap and I know a lot of babies are sensitive to it.  DH doesn't think it's the Charlie's since we wash all of her clothes in it.  He said if she were sensitive she would be developing a rash on her whole body.  Of course my mother is saying "It's those stupid cloth diapers."  We change her right away after she goes so I'm not sure what is causing the redness.  I feel like a terrible mom.  She screams bloody murder when I wipe her,  :-(  What else can I use besides CJ's to clear it up?

Re: Diaper rash - Please help.

  • Sorry you are dealing with this! I hate when people blame CDs for rashes. When we had this problem, we solved it by using less soap and adding an extra rinse cycle after the hot wash to our routine. Could it be yeast?  Is it a generalized redness or tiny red bumps?

If it's generalized redness then it's just regular diaper rash. If there are red bumps (like little pimples) it's yeast. Make sure she's getting plenty of diaper free time to air her bottom, it really helps. You could try putting a fleece liner between her bottom and the diaper to help her feel more dry.

If it's yeast here is a link on how to deal with it.

  • Thanks ladies for your help!  It's just generalized redness.  No red bumps.  It's really red though.  Poor baby.

Sorry, I should have clarified my post. I was asking if it was a generalized redness OR red bumps. Bumps indicate yeast. For generalized redness, we have been using the GroVia Magic Stick for prevention or coconut oil. It's awesome.

  • We had pimply rash that wasn't yeast, but was a reaction to the detergent. She didn't react anywhere else on her body to the detergent. The reaction to urine, plus it being most, creates an atmosphere where her skin will react to the detergent where it won't on other areas of the body because it's not wet and rubbing.
