Success after IF

Talk to me about taking infants to the swimming pool.

What's the best type of safety device to get? What do you like?

At a  consignment sale this weekend I saw these bathing suit contraptions with built-in floatation devices. Until then I didn't even know these existed! I would have considered taking a chance on one at consignment prices if there was one in Annika's size, but there wasn't. Do any of you have one of these, and if so, do you like it?

Or if you don't use a suit with a built in device, what do you use? (looking for specific product recs)

Thanks :)

  • For an infant? Nothing. She stayed in my arms the entire time.

I know what you're saying. I'm just looking for a little extra security.

  • We have a little inflatable ring with canopy for the pool. But honestly DD always hated it. She craved the security of our arms. In general floatation devices are not recommended precisely because they give parents a false sense of security. Although you will find many people use them. Because we have a pool we've actually avoided them since the infant float because it's important for us to know DDs real skill level and more important for one of us to always be right there.

  • We had a baby float that I got off A.mazon or something....not a swimsuit with a flotation device, I never used those with either of my girls b/c I didn't like the idea of them becoming too reliant on that vs actually learning to swim.  What I used when they were infants was a ring with a seat in it so my daughters would sit in it when they were babies and their feet would hang into the water.  To be honest, neither of them would stay in it that long but they would at least hang for a few minutes in it.  Then, they wanted to be held.

I got one of those pop up sun shade things at a consignment sale and figure we are going to stick to the baby pool all summer where hopefully they can sit up just fine and I can keep a hand on each one.  Twins at the pool is going to be some new kind of fresh hell :)

  • When we took Anna on vacation when she was 10 months old, she loved the little inner tube seat we brought.   We were always holding onto the tube to make sure she didn't tip over, but it was a nice place to sit her when we were tired of having her in our arms.   I was also pretty anxious with her in my arms, so I liked having her in something I could hold onto instead.    But ditto what others have said - I would avoid any of the flotation suits.
