what kind of bed rail do you have?

I'm in NZ, so I probably can't access whatever brands you use, but info would be useful so that I can google to look at pics.

I ask because we're looking to bedshare with our 8 week old. Up until now I've been sleeping in bed with her and DH has been sleeping in the spare bed. We started off like this so that he could get up to deal with toddler when she woke, and we could both get the most sleep just attending to one child rather than us both waking to both of  them.

2 yr old has settled into consistently STTN and we'd like to both be back in the bed again.

I don't feel comfortable with LO sleeping between us, but because I'm used o her and I each having our own space I was thinking about a bed rail.

But the bedrails I've seen, seem like they could suffocate a newborn anyway, even though they're just mesh, the bottom inch or two is woven fabric. So maybe they're more useful when baby is rolling/crawling.

So what can you tell me about the safest way to bedshare with an 8 week old and both of us in a queen bed. Should we look at a bed rail? Or a snuggle next?

We don't really have space to sidecar her crib, or put an arms reach sleeper in...but possibly could squeeze it in if it seemed the best idea.

I sit up to nurse (because I have giant boobs and worry about suffocating her side nursing) so that's not an issue with a snuggle nest etc.

So anyone have thoughts, advice, experience? Thanks

Re: what kind of bed rail do you have?

  • I have one (Safety First, I think) that clamps on top of the mattress rather than pushing up against it. To me, that seemed the safest. Honestly, DS never moved when he was little. He'd fall asleep in the crook of my arm and we'd wake that way a few hours later. The "solid" bottom bit didn't worry me at all.

You will probably progress to side lying nursing in a few weeks, too. A newborn doesn't stay new for long!

  • Thanks for that. Safety First is the brand I was looking at here. I did think it was unlikely for LO to move, as whether she is lying by herself or snugged against me, she doesn't move.

With DD1 I didn't feel comfortable with side-nursing until she was nearly 6 months. Like I said, my boobs are giant, but I'll be interested to see if I feel more comfortable sooner with DD2 because I've found everything easier and less stressful this time around.
