I always thought of Madelyn as a "modernized" variation of Madeline, mostly because I see a lot of names where mom & dad just subbed a "y" for the "i" (Eryca, Kym, Eryn, Jaydyn, etc.). If I saw Madeline/Madelyn on my classroom roster, I would pronounce them the same (mad-uh-LIN). But that's just me.

What pronunciations did you have in mind?

  • interesting! i totally thought they were two valid different names... along with madeleine actually... with pronunciations like:

    madeline - mad-uh-LINE
    madelyn - mad-uh-LYN
    madeleine (french) - mad-eh-LEHN

  • Madelyn. My great grandma was Madolyn. She would be in her late 90's now.

This is how I say all three also. I would go with Madeline because everyone and their cousin is named Madelyn it seems.

    This.

But I don't like the 'y' substitution trend in girl's names AT ALL anyway...

This, except in English I'd pronounce the last two the same, MAD-uh-lyn.

Madeline, however, should definitely be pronounced Mad-uh-LINE.  If you don't believe me pick up a Madeline book and look at the rhymes.

  • Madeline. Pronounced line. How cool would it be to have a series of books with your name?
