My very set in his ways and food lovin' hubby is agreeing to do a 15 day juice cleanse with me. I am so excited. We are starting it the day after Easter. So, I am in full research mode. We watched fat, sick and nearly dead, and it was so inspiring. We love veggies and we are pretty fit but still, it will be a challenge.
I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences if you've done one.
Re: This is a big, BIG deal.
We did it. It lasted about 3 days and we were on the verge of divorce when we finally gave in and ordered pizza.
1 year later, I'm still trying to wash the stench of mean green out of my favorite bottle...
So if you are pretty healthy & fit, what is the actual point? I get eating really healthy, but I don't actually get the idea of a cleanse other than to say you did it. Does it make you poop a lot?
Full disclaimer - I am not terribly fit and like my liquids to include wine or vodka.
Nope, we got this. We will do veggie juices mixed at home along with raw fruits and veggies for 5 days, just juices for 5 , and then raw foods and juices again.
You may want to buy a new bottle.
Mine took I adore wine, but I can go 15 days without for sure! But, honestly I LOVE veggies, I eat good, I sleep great, I am (very) active. But I don't feel GREAT! I have been gluten free as we thought DS1 had a gluten allergy for a stretch(2 months) before we visited an allergist. I felt no better on that. I just want to recharge. I also found the movie so inspiring. I am not worried about following the 15 day cleanse at all. check it out.
I did the 21 day cleanse (The plan is to eliminate caffeine, sugar, alcohol, gluten and animal products from your diet for up to 21 days.) and I still remember how absolutely fantastic I felt. I agree that 'cleanses' that are basically laxative regimens are nonsense but a cleanse where you eat nothing but 'good' food is great, imo and ime.
Last night we watched 'forks over knives' which is about the china study (vegan). It inspired us again!
I have also seen fat sick and nearly dead.
Food is very powerful!
This, exactly. Your body is this really cool thing that self cleanses.
Eat better, sure, but any of those cleanses are ridiculous.

It's not ridiculous. And, I am aware of how the body functions. It's cool, it works. But, I also know that we put lots of junk into our bodies, can I make small improvements, sure? Can I take a big leap and eat tons and tons of fruits and veggie for 15 days, yes.
Glad to hear you felt great. I have yet to read anything negative about doing it when done correctly. I am just so excited that my DH is on board. I think it will great to do it together.
This is the website and the plan we will be following.

Yeah I don't think it's ridiculous, either. If our body cleansed properly, there wouldn't be this huge noticeable change when you do a cleanse. They rid your body of toxins and make you feel fabulous. I guess if you've never tried it, it's easy to think it's ridiculous.
Well, how do you know I've never tried it? You don't. I have, actually. Hence the reason that I know they are stupid.
Your body isn't made to have nothing but juice for 2 weeks. Of COURSE you are going to feel better if you get vastly increased amounts of vitamins and minerals when you've been eating badly.
DS - December 2006
DD - December 2008
If you felt better then why is it stupid and ridiculous?
placebo effect?
Umm, no. My body won't be processing caffeine, gluten, animal products. I am pretty sure the effects of that will be real and significant. I eat well but yea, I like pizza and coffee and all the other great stuff so I'm pretty sure a 15 day juice cleanse will be a bit different for my body.
Because I felt like shiit and almost passed out on several occasions. My doctor thought the cleanses were a joke and after trying it, I completely agree.
If you EAT (not drink) vastly improved diet, of course you will feel better. That's kind of a no-brainer.

It wasn't for you, got it! Thanks for your input.
I think you'll enjoy the results. While our bodies are self cleaning, they weren't necessarily designed to purge the kinds of impurities we're faced with in todays world.
I bet if you take it a step further, and try using minimal products or just very natural ones (this is hard- but deodorant especially...well..antiperspirant) you might benefit even further. your skin is your largest organ and it will benefit from this too- what we absorb through our skin contact also has to be processed you'll drink a lot of water during the purge right? .
enjoy! I think it's a great idea to do this kind of thing a couple of times a year. ( this kind- not the weight loss ones or snake oil things..)
you'll be giving your organs a great opportunity to recover from even the impurities of modern life! I plan to do this once I've lost the rest of the weight i have to lose to get into a cleaner mode. I am running 30 pounds smaller than my old sizes, so I have between 26 and 56 pounds left to lose, but I have been feeling fantastic! Im relying more on caffeine and advil and things than I'd like to, but my first goal is getting the weight off, then I'll overhaul my other evils...(lol) one step at a time!
Guess you took it as a dig toward you. It wasn't. Guess I should have said "general you" and I was actually talking about the first response. Or people that knock it before they try it, anything. Everything works differently for other people.
Thanks for the support. I am really excited to do it. The suggestion of not using products is a really good one, I hadn't thought of that.
GOOD JOB on the weight loss, that is fantastic! You must feel pretty great. I will keep you posted on how the cleanse goes. We are starting the tuesday after Easter.
thanks, dude! I DO feel amazing. the coolest part is that my size in clothing reflects what I wore when I was thirty pounds thinner than I am now...so- that's why the confusion on how much more I want to lose. 26-56...I am not hung up on weight but more of a look..
Do keep me posted on your cleanse, I look forward to hearing how you like it. it can get tough, but I think the benefits are well worth it. bodies are amazing things, but our environmental and dietary changes through time are an undeniable impact- even if you keep a healthy diet and avoid most of the obvious bad things.
I really liked using honey on my skin for awhile- it has a nice effect on the tone and my pores, though it was messy and I stopped using it...and I hear rave reviews on Tom's of Maine apricot deodorant (ONLY that one...Ive tried others and I hated them...) I need some heavy duty stuff right now, though...people are getting into an oil cleanse method for skin care, but I haven't even tried it yet..
I mean, if you can get by on the more natural products while you're cleansing, I'd love to hear the overall result...
I remember you talking about wanting to lose weight, so that is so great! It's empowering to take control of something and really see good results! Are you exercising or mainly focusing on your diet?
Now about the honey, did you wash your face with it or just use it as a mask? I could probably get by for that period of time with just hot water and a wash cloth. Prekids I could skip the deodorant too but my kids make me sweat, a lot. Hmmm, I don't have to give up my makeup though too would I. I think that would seriously put me over the edge, no food and NO MAKEUP! Eeek!
So I will let you know. I may also take a video diary (geek) which I'll probably put on youtube once it's over, since I've loved checking them out the past couple days.
- Hey and thanks for coming and visiting us over here. It seems it is the uncool thing to do, but we appreciate it!
I was the first responder and I was specifically responding to a 2 week juice cleanse. My response is based on my education, but not personal experience. I agree that a healthier diet is better for you. I don't believe a liquid diet is healthy.
Agreed. I can't see wanting to be healthy then doing something horribly unhealthy and depriving your body of nutrients it needs in the name of health. Makes no sense at all.
the point of the juice cleanse though is that it's hyper-concentrated nutrients. Not deprivation.
It's like you can't easily eat pounds and pounds of spinach.. but if you make it into a juice you can. That's a simplified version of the premise.
The China Study/forks over knives people are NOT juice fans btw. They say fiber is critical and is lost in juicing. They propose a whole foods plant based diet.
Right, but how could you possibly get all the nutrients your body needs in life from just liquid fruits and vegetables? There's other things on the food pyramid for a reason.
I'm sure in some cases like when someone is pushing 300lbs, the benefits outweigh the risks for sure if it jump starts weight loss. Otherwise I think it's insane.
I will be eating fruits and veggies too for the first and last 5 days. I am very in tune with my body, if I feel it is suffering in anyway I will stop the cleanse.
Anyway feel free to document what you put into your body over the course of the next 15 days, I would be glad to judge.
I was just reading this, this morning.
https://fitbie.msn.com/eat-right/your-body-detox
I thought it was pretty interesting.
Are you surprised that when you post following an extremely controversial diet people aren't going to be jumping up and down and saying "wow, what an excellent idea!?"
I'm not really sure how you'd get the amount of calories to not go into starvation mode (ie 1200 assuming you're sitting on your couch the whole time doing no exercise at all) solely from fruit and vegetables since they tend to be so low cal. Care to share your diet?
She already did share it in this post, but here it is.
https://www.jointhereboot.com/index.php?lang=au
What happens after the 15 days are done?
We will continue to eat healthy and likely more mindfully. We will try to keep fruits and veggies at the bottom of our food pyramid, so the largest parts of our meals come from that food group.
Fruits and veggies are great for you, but have you done research on what a lack of protein does to your body? Or what the repercussions are of essentially starving yourself for two weeks? Based on an average intake of 1,500 calories per day, and that is for someone who is not active, consuming less than that causes your body to consider itself starving weather you feel it or not.
I read the site and I can't see how you could get the recommended amount of calories following that plan. The day by day recipes are much lower than that and are lacking in so many nutrients. I can't believe people actually buy into that crap.
I mean, sure if you're obese, following that to jump start a love of fruits/vegetables-the benefits outweigh the risks. Otherwise thats just foolish.
Really, you checked out the recipes? Because many of the juices have 400 calories and you can drink as much as you want. Some of the soups have 300 plus, many of the recipes include avocado and/or olive oil which provide more then enough fat and calories. I am not going to starve myself, thank you for your concern.
