Introducing new solids....

I posted about solids a few days ago, and now I'm back. I tried putting a few yogurt drops on the tray in front of her, and she was completely not interested. After a while of putting one in her hand, trying to offer one, even eating one myself, she was completely over it. So I gave up and fed her a puree. Now, I know it will happen in good time. What did you do to help your LO become interested in eating solids? Feeding themselves? I'm thinking I may try some frozen veggies tonight? Something more colorful may catch her eye? I'm not trying to rush anything, I'm in no hurry for her to grow up. Just looking for suggestions of things to try :)

Re: Introducing new solids....

  • Does she watch you eat, or do you usually feed yourself while she eats a puree?  I knew mine was ready when she started grabbing at my food and my plate.  She'd watch my fork travel from my plate to my mouth and then mimic me chewing; that's when I started putting puffs and small pieces of fruit on her tray.  I usually give her some cut up fruit or puffs while I heat up something more substantial for her.  She practices feeding herself, and then I spoon feed her the rest of her lunch.  Maybe try a piece of fruit or veggie she's already has as a puree and once she recognizes the taste, that might catch her attention?  Good luck!  Oh, and one thing to watch out for - - once she figures out what to do, don't put a lot on her tray all at once.  Mine has a tendency to shove every offered piece of food into her mouth and then try to chew, so I can only give her two or three pieces at a time.

  • DD still isn't too interested but loves when I give her raw apples (whole and half peeled) and raw carrots (whole and peeled). The other day I slightly cooked them so the core was still solid but she was able to gum off small pieces of the edge and she liked that. I just keep telling myself that she'll eat at her own pace and won't be bfing forever.
  • DS didn't start feeding himself till 8.5 months he just didn't understand, then one day he started taking my hand holding the puff and putting it in his mouth and then a couple days later his pincher grasp developed. His favorite things he will always pick up are peas and shredded mozzarella cheese. He still refuses to pick up fruit and chicken idk why maybe the way it feels? but he will eat it if i put it in his mouth

  • Maybe try something bigger like a carrot stick (steamed or raw) or whole wheat toast cut the size of a steak fry.

Maybe the bigger size will be easier for her to pick up and she'll play with it. Which will lead to her putting it in her mouth and discovering it tastes good.

  • I agree that bigger pieces of food might be helpful. Something were she can grab a portion in her fist and there is still food sticking out to go into her mouth.

If you want to give her yogurt, you could try giving it with something to dip into the yogurt (piece of toast/fruit/etc).
