Preemies

NEC

On our trip up to NICU today and after talking with the dr, it looks like DS has NEC disease.  They are treating him with triple anitbiotics for 7 days and regular x-rays and feel confident they caught it early on.  I am praying that it is treated with the anitbiotics and he will not require another surgery.  Looking at him and in looking back over the last two weeks and all he overcame, he is so strong and such a trooper.  Even the doctors say it.  It is just so sad to know he has these problems going on on the inside.  My poor little guy has been through so much already.

Re: NEC

  • We had a NEC scare, and I know you must be completely overwhelmed.  It is so hard to see them sick and to feel like you're moving backwards.  Hang in there!

It turned out my LO didn't have NEC, but he was treated similarly for three days until they were 120% sure of that (IV, back to Intensive Care, isolette, etc).  We thought he was a week or so away from going home when it happened, and we were absolutely heartbroken.

All I can say is have faith because these little guys are fighters!  William came off the IV and, for the first time since birth, finished the whole bottle we offered him. He took that bottle and EVERY SINGLE BOTTLE for the next 7 days.  Then he came home! These preemies fight hard and bounce back like nothing you've ever seen!

As I write this, I'm watching my (almost) 10 month old preemie pushing his radio flyer wagon around the den laughing.  You'll be doing the same in no time!!!

Lots of hugs and prayers for you.

  • Our DD is a NEC survivor.  I am so happy for you and your family  that the NICU team caught it early.  Our tiniest peanuts are stronger that we realize.  Sometimes I felt like DD was holding me up when I didn't think we could take on anymore.  My prayers are with you, mama.  Please message me if you want to talk about our NEC experience.

  • We had a NEC scare 2 months into the NICU.  It was very scary.  They treated it the same way they are treating your LO with stopping feeds and giving antibiotics.  Thankfully he didn't develop NEC.  Our little ones are very strong.

  • Our little man is a NEC survivor. He needed two surgeries and is on his way to coming home. Hang in there! It's scary as hell.
