I have started giving DS formula on Tuesdays and Thursdays while I am at school. This is just to build my BM stash in the freezer. I am using the lipil with iron. Im only using it because I got it for free in the mail. Is this a good formula? I have noticed that he doesn't have as many bowel movements (like once or twice a week) and he is 3 months. He doesn't seem to have gas issues. What formulas do you guys suggest and why?
Re: formula question?
I started exclusively FF at around 1 month. DS's bowel movements went from 4-5 mustardy bm poops a day to greenish yellow play-doh poops. He goes about every day and a half now.
We use Enfamil Lipil with Iron, truthfully because that's what all the babies in my family have used and my sister had given me 2 large cans of powdered that she had left over from her DS.
The hospital gave us Similac Advance samples, so we started with that and DS had issues with it. I suspect that his gas issues were more related to the introduction of formula while I was still B. We were supplementing 2-3 feedings a day.
Our pedi says that nutritionally, they are all pretty much the same from brand to brand when you are comparing the same variety ( lipil to lipil, gentle to gentle, etc), but would prefer that DS be on the lipil as long as he has no digestive issues.
We use Nestle GoodStart Supreme (orange can); pedi recommended GoodStart (didn't say why, stupid me didn't ask either).
I picked the orange can, the hospital had given us free samples and it was what my nephew used, so Grandma always has a can at her house too (we go there almost everyday to visit). DS hasn't had any issues so we've stuck with it. He poops daily consistently, every once in awhile it'll stretch to 36 hours.
FF poop is way smellier than BM poop
It sounds like your guy is doing fine on the Enfamil. It's normal for a formula-fed baby to have less frequent bowel movements. Frequency also decreases as babies get older. As long as it's not a hard consistency or painful for your DS to go, he's fine.
Since the Enfamil seems to be working, I would stick with it. If you want to save money, you could try a generic formula, but I would pick one soon and stick with it.
