I had an unplanned c-section with DS. I had an epidural during labor. During the c-section I was fighting SO hard to stay awake until he was born. It was a tiredness I couldn't control, so I feel it was from the drugs and not me being exhausted from labor. He finally came out, I got to see him, and then when they took him away I fell asleep and woke up in recovery. Will my experience be different with a planned c-section since I will only have the spinal?
Also, is a planned c-section treated like a typical surgery and I will be told not to eat anything past midnight or whatever time they tell me? I'm just curious since I wasn't able to eat anything for a while after my unplanned c-section.
Re: Planned c-section and reaction to spinal?
I had a planned c-section with DS. You definitely have to not eat, not drink, etc. You'll probably even have to go in a week early to get your blood tested etc.
yes you are having major surgery (csections are major surgery)..you will not be able to eat or drink for about 8-10 hours before.
I also go to sleep after the baby is out, but that is because they give me something due to the fact that I have trouble during surgery with chest pain.
Discuss it with your dr. before and anesthsia, maybe they can give you meds that are different.
Some people do stay awake, but that hasn't happened to me yet! I don't even remember the room, etc. but thats alright everyone is safe and happy.
My first c/s was unplanned after laboring for hours and an epidural that didn't work....I couldn't keep my eyes open after they woke me up. I remember holding my DD in one arm and using my other hand to physically hold my eye open so I could look at her....it was awful!!!
My second c/s was planned....It was at 8am- nothing to eat after 10pm the night before. They pulled her out and I saw her....they finished me while cleaning her up. I held her....and it was a MUCH more pleasant experience. At 44 hours I was sitting on the edge of my bed asking to go home....they wouldn't release me until 48 hours.
Walk- it hurts at first, but take your pain meds and walk. It helps with your healing and the gas. Take the pain meds on schedule....you will wean off them in a few days.
Have stuff where you can reach it easily. I was tired when I got home- the combination of the surgery, meds, and a baby who wakes up frequently at first. The more accessible stuff is the less overwhelming it is.
Just found out I am pregnant again and I will def. go the c/s route.
good lucK!
I have had the same reaction with both my spinals. I am expecting it again. My blood pressure drops and I dry heave the entire surgery. No fun but all worth it. I stayed awake until recovery both times. I have talked some with a friend who is an anesthesiologist and he said they can prevent the dry heaving so to insist on lots of anti nausea meds this round.
