C-sections

The nasty drink before a csection :/

What is everyone's experience with the gross sour drink you have before a csection? Is it only before emergency csections, or scheduled ones too? Has anyones doctor offered something different that does the same thing? The 2 things I'm dreading about my section csection are the spinal ( because I had a bad experience with the epidural during my first one ) and the gross drink because it made me feel so sick! Maybe my doctor will forget about the drink...haha : )

Re: The nasty drink before a csection :/

  • I didn't have a sour drink or any type of drink before my csection. I did not have an emergency c section.

As for the spinal, I was so scared, but I didnt even feel it when he did it! He numbed it first which was the worst part and that only felt like a small sting. I have never had an epidural so I can not compare it to that.

  • I did not have a drink either.  I was induced with unplanned c section

  • I had it! Mine was an unplanned CS. They said it was to help break down anything left in my stomach. So nasty.

I would *think* if you have a RCS, since you aren't allowed to eat beforehand, you wouldn't have to take it.

  • I had mine! And it came right back up!!!! As soon as they laid me down after the spinal, I got violently ill from my BP dropping so fast that I vomited that stuff right back up, and continued to vomit for the first 2 days! Sucks going down, but sucks even worse going up.

  • It's gross but I swear, you forget about it (unless someone mentions it on a forum... lol) until your next c/s.

I have never heard of this - and I have sent plenty of patients to the OR for emergency surgeries. Usually we just put down a nasogastric tube to suction out stomach contents. Sounds terrible!

  • I've never heard of this!!!  yuck, doesn't sound like fun.  Mine was emergency c/s and I didn't have to take anything, maybe it was because they knew I hadn't eaten anything in the 11 hrs leading up to the c/s, or maybe it's just a different policy at different hospitals.

That is a good point! I had been in the hosp. for 20 hours so I guess that is why I never got it.

  • With c-section #1, I had been in the hospital for nearly 2 days before it happened so they knew my stomach was empty.

With #2, it was a planned c-section. I didn't have anything after 12pm the night before and didn't have to have any sort of drink before.

  • I never drank it and had an unplanned c/s. But it had been a long time since I had eaten. If you're having a RCS, you'll have to stop eating x hours before it, so I would imagine you wouldn't need the drink.

  • I didn't have to drink anything and my c/s was unplanned...but I checked in at 7:30 am and didn't get the c/s until 8:30 pm and they didn't let me eat.  If it's to break down anything in your stomach that's probably why.

  • I had to drink it before my unplanned c-section and wound up throwing it up all over DH about 10 minutes later.
  • I had an unplanned c/s during labor and I did not have to drink anything.  I'm assuming you are taking about an antacid?

I had to drink a gross sour drink. I think the nurse said it was to neutralize any stomach acid. It was an unplanned c section, but I hadn't eaten anything in about 10 hours.

  • Lurking, but decided to respond. I had a planned c/s, I wasn't allowed to eat anything for like 12 hour before, and I still had to take that damn drink.
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.
  • With ds #1 I had to drink the drink. I ended up throwing it up very shortly after drinking it. My cs wasn't planned so I had eaten several hrs before I had surgery.

With ds #2 I was asked how long it was since I had last eaten anything (it was 8+ hrs). I didn't have to drink anything this time around. We had a planned cs for the very next day except my water broke and he wanted to come early. So we went w/ the cs anyways because things moved FAST this time around. Fast and incredibly painful!

  • I had it, and my c/s were scheduled.  Didn't any of you drink shots in college?  I didn't think it was great by any means, but no worse than a shot of some cheap hard liquor back in the day.  Wink

  • it was probably the anti-nausea meds. It came in a little cup...kinda grape flavored? Anyway, I had it and it didn't even go down the whole way before coming back up, "shredding" my throat for 2 days. This time around, if told to take it, I'm declining it just like I declined the Reglan; totally through the nurse off. Guess she wasn't use to someone refusing to take it.

  • Weird, I've never heard of this either. I had an emergency c-section, and I ate in the hospital during labour, and didn't have this.

  • I had to drink it and it was disgusting. It ended up coming back up as they were doing my spinal and also got sick in the recovery room. I was in the hospital for 3 days before the unplanned c/s and hadn't eaten in over 15 hours and still had to drink it.

I would ask your Dr what your hospitals rules are since they are all different.

I was really scared about a epidural or spinal, but it really wasn't all that bad.

  • I had to have that nasty drink when I had DD because my water broke a few hours after lunch.  My impression was if I hadn't eaten within 8 hours of the c-section that I wouldn't have had to drink it.  If it is planned, I don't think you have to drink it.

  • My hospital said I will need it.  Csection is scheduled for 9:30 so I prob won't eat in almost 12 hours.  They said it neutrolizes stomach acid and medicine.

  • One of my c-sections was unplanned and the other was planned. I didn't have to drink anything either time. With the planned c-section I was told they were putting an antacid in my IV. I assume they did the same with the unplanned one but no one said anything.

  • Never heard of it before. I had an emergency c/s and at least one of the nurses knew I had had breakfast abour 2 hours before and they weren't concerned about my stomach contents. Maybe b/c it was such an emergency they didn't even have time? But in any case, I had never even heard of it from others before.

  • I had an emergency c/s and I had to take it. they said it was to keep away an upset stomach. Which is ironic because as soon as I drank it, I projectile vomited all over. Stick out tongue

  • Hi I am a lurker in the board. My name is Alisha. The name of the medicine is bicitra. It helps neutralize the stomach acids so that if you happen to vomit while on the table since you are awake you will not ingest it into your lungs and it is less likely to get a pneumonia. Yes I vomited a lot after taking it, but only after receiving my spinal and it was a reaction to the medicine in the spinal not the drink. I cont to vomit for the rest of the day. It was not from the drink because you vomited it all up as soon as you get the spinal. Not everyone reacts the same way. I did not have it with my son who was an er c-section. My daughter was scheduled and I did not eat for 8 hours before. I also use this on my tube feeding patients at work. In case the aspirate their formula it will help prevent pneumonia in them also. Hope this helped.

  • I've had it every time I've had surgery.  It's like 1 oz of that putrid stuff, but easy enough to get down.  My GERD is so bad right now, I wouldn't dream of not drinking it before the c/s.

  • I had an emergency c/s. The drink was horrific, but short-lived. It's an antiemetic, if I remember correctly. I haven't read the responses.

ETA: I wouldn't call it a "drink." It's not like you sip on it for a long period of time. It's a shot.

  • LOL

I forgot all about it too!  I had a planned C/S.  My surgery was put off three times (same morning) while other emergency c/s took place, so I was just anxious to have my baby.  I guzzled it.

This. I didn't have to drink anything.

  • Mine was scheduled, I had no food, and I drank it.

It wasn't bad. I agree, it is like a little shot. Tastes more sour and baking soda like than anything else. Not tasty, not worth worrying about either.

  • I had to drink it 2 times.  Once before my epidural was put in during labor and then once again when they decided to do a section and had to boost my epidural.  I was not a fan.  This is one thing I am not looking forward to when we get pregnant again.  Oh well.
