Re: encouraging walking?

  • we have a push toy, or we walk with her by having her hold onto our fingers as she walks.  She just started "pushing" stuff...like her entertainment chair, instead of just standing by it, she pushes it and walks with it :)  That's when we busted out our push toy.

  • we do a lot of walking around with C holding on of our hands! he has great balance - but just isn't brave enough to try unassisted just yet!

  • Similar to the above; he almost runs w/ his push toy and will transfer from one piece of furniture to another.  Takes a couple steps with us holding one hand and will walk quickly with us holding both.  Not brave enough to let go and try it on his own yet for the most part.  I'm so excited, though!  Just as exciting as the first time.  Well, maybe not quite, since L didn't walk til 16mon...that was pretty darn exciting.

  • We hold his hands and let him walk around with us.  He also likes to stand at his music table and push it around the room.  He's getting braver and letting go and falling towards me when I try and get him to walk towards me but no steps on his own yet.

  • X has taken a few wobbly steps. His motivator: food and the cat. Maybe you could use his favorite toy or food to encourage a few steps.

  • DS likes to push an upside-down laundry basket across the room.  He hits the wall on the other side then gets mad he can't keep going.  He hasn't got the turn around thing down yet.

  • Mila only recently started trying to let go of stuff, but nothing yet. If I try to walk with her, from front or behind, she just goes down to her knees. She can, however, stand up and stay up for a few seconds, without pulling up on anything. I got her a push-toy a few weeks ago, and she loves pushing it around, and does great with it... until she runs it into a wall or something. Then she gets REALLY MAD. Haha. I try to get her to "walk" with me a couple times a day, at least.

  • DS has been walking with his sit-to-stand walker and holding onto our hands for about 2 months now and just recently started letting go of things and taking a couple of steps on his own.  I'm not sure if anything I did really encouraged it.  I always tried to let go of his hands when we were walking or have him between me and another person trying to see if he would walk between us, but he always sits down and crawls when that happens.  I think he's just doing things on his own terms.  The most he's taken is 3 steps on his own and it was between the couch and ottoman.

  • He practically runs with his walker toy thing, and loves to walk while holding our fingers, but hasn't figured out how to try it on his own yet.  He also loves to "walk" from DH to me and back.

MIL set up her living room this morning so that it's pretty much lined in furniture and he was walking all around the perimeter of the room when I left.  Love!
