Quiting the bottle?

Has anyone started putting BM/formula in a sippy cup for LO to drink out of, in place of a bottle or breast feeding?  I noticed two moms on my FB feed that have been doing this for a few weeks, and their LOs are about 4 and 6 weeks older than Ty.  I know every one does things on their own schedule, but I didn't even think about doing it this early.  Our pedi said to aim to be off the bottle between 12-14 months.  How long do you think it'll logically take to get off the bottle?  I just don't feel like it's time to even think about it yet.  He's still a baby.  Babies drink from bottles!!  Stop growing and thriving little man!!!

  • I've wondered about this too! I think I'm going to ask my daycare what they typically do. She likes water from a straw cup ok, but we've never given her anything else in it. The only place she gets bottles is there, so I may ask them what they typically do to make the switch.

  • One time I tried putting his formula in a sippy, but he wouldn't take it. I think we're a ways off from bottle weaning. We offer a sippy with water all the time, hoping he'll get the hang of it eventually. So far we've only had limited success with a straw cup.

  • I'm gonna try it tomorrow. One of Callie's daycare teachers suggested trying it since she's eating solid foods so well and does so well with water in the sippy. So I think tomorrow I'm gonna try to give her one of her bottles in a sippy. I'll feed her like a bottle to get her used to having the formula in there. And then eventually hopefully she'll drink it from there herself (without getting it all over like she does with her water!).

  • I haven't yet (Though I really need to start). My pedi recommended switching out one bottle to a sippy, waiting 3 weeks, doing another, waiting 3 weeks and so on until he's on all sippies and no bottles.

    Hopefully this works!

Right now, he's drinking water out of the sippy at dinner and lunch.

  • DS refused the sippy until we tried the one by NUK. Our pediatrician was shocked yesterday when she said to start working on the sippy cup and I told her he only takes a sippy now.

We tried on a whim when he was refusing to eat/drink due to an ear infection. I gave it to him in a sippy and he chugged it down. We tried various times of the day over the next few days to see if there was a time of day he would refuse (primarily 1st/last of the day). He had no issues. We then went cold turkey. He could care less and loves the sippy.

  • We're actually going to start working on this this weekend. Our pedi mentioned him being on a sippy by a year. He's nowhere near that - he can use one but we're not consistent with it. So this weekend we're going to give at least a few bottles in a sippy to see how he does and get him used to the idea. Once I know he'll actually take formula from the sippy I'll probably just start with one feeding each day, then slowly add feedings.

  • I'm starting in the next couple of weeks- probably one bottle at a time, every two weeks or so.  My only concern is that although she drinks water from a sippy fine- I tried putting her formula in there once and she took about two sips and then refused to drink anymore.  So I'm not sure it's going to be as easy as I'd hoped...  but maybe if I'm repetitive and don't give in she'll eventually take to it?

I'd like to have it done by the time she's a year, because if you go over the the 12-24 month board there are constantly posts about people with 15-18 month olds who completely refuse milk from a sippy.

  • Thanks ladies, glad to see i'm not the only one that hadn't started yet.  I like the idea of trying to switch one a day and slowly start switching more.  I think I'll try this weekend.  I did try giving him a sippy with formula last night but I think he was overtired and just need a momma cuddle with the bottle because he was out like a light immediately after.  Well before his usual bedtime too!
  • I really want to be done with bottles by her first bday.  So far, it's not looking hopeful.
