Those Who Are Musically Inclined...

I have played flute and piccolo for years... Actually... Decades now.... I am hoping that K will also play the flute and piccolo and I want to try and get her started early if at all possible. Obviously, if she hates it I won't force it on her... But I'm really hoping it'll be something we can share!

Anyone else that's musically inclined plan on trying to get LO to play a musical instrument or sing?

Re: Those Who Are Musically Inclined...

  • I played the clarinet from 7th grade through college. I now play the piano; I took lessons for over 2 years and still continue to play. I wanted to play the piano for my whole life, but my dad could only afford to one instrument and one set of lessons for me, so I chose the clarinet back then. I took piano lessons as an adult.

DH plays the guitar and drums. We have so many instruments in our house! I hope DD will want to play an instrument (anyone, really), but I will not push her into anything. I will gladly put her through lessons if she is interested.

  • I played the flute for several years and had saxophone lessons as well.  I really wanted to learn the piano and am still considering lessons for myself.  I'd really like for Stella to learn some instruments.

  • I play flute and piccolo primarily, but can also play alto & tenor sax, clarinet, and piano. At one point I could play the oboe, but my mouth is not a big fan of the double reed anymore.

I had actually planned to do a bachelor of music, and had auditioned at a university and everything when I injured my shoulder, and destroyed those dreams. I even have a bass and treble clef tattooed on either side of my right ankle!

So, yes, I will DEFINITELY encourage D to pick up an instrument as young as I possibly can. I want him to love music as much as I do.

  • I teach flute and clarinet  and I want DD to learn to play an instrument but i much prefer her pick oboe, bassoon, cello or viola. I don't want her to play an instrument that's over played. This way if she goes further in the music field she'll find a job easier :) I also want her to play piano, I wish I'd started with that, I've played on and of since my senior year of HS and still suck :(

  • i play piano, act, sing and pretend i can dance. DH does as well and directs. i am really hoping J and baby X are artisic. we have a piano, DH and i play with J on our laps. we have a guitar we let him mess around with, we CONSTANTLY sing to him and dance around with him. he comes to DH's Play rehearsals and loves to sit in a room while everyone is singing. i just plan on exposing him (and baby x) to as much as i possibly can.

they will both take piano as soon as i can enroll them though. they can quit after grade school, or if they start to play something else, but that is the one thing i will be a tiger mom about.

  • I play the piano and played the cello for a few years. DH plays the trumpet. We're definitely planning on starting Ev on an instrument early - probably piano and violin. Hopefully he'll enjoy playing as much as we both did/do!

Hmm  Why am I not surprised... Our kiddos were born on the same day. We both play flute and piccolo primarily.... I played a little bit of oboe, but dear God it hurt my mouth to do so... You're freakin' me out sunset. Surprise

  • DH is a high school orchestra director, plays just about every instrument and was in band and orchestra from middle school through college. I was in band (oboe) and excelled in choir and musical theater. So, yeah, our kids are going to be involved in the music arts in some way, shape or form.

We joke that DS has to play french horn or bassoon, since they are so hard to play well and scholarships are fairly easy to get for those instruments. There are instruments that are on our "Dear God, please no" lists. I would hate to lug around a huge instrument like a hard, double bass (DH's primary instrument) or tuba (DH's other main instrument). DH would die if any of our kids play trumpet or percussion.

I'm kind of the same way... There is a part of me that would love if she played flute and piccolo..... And I may still teach her myself if she's interested.... But I would totally love it if she played cello.... It's just such a beautiful sound! Maybe I'll get a harp for her to play, that'd be different.   Wink

  • I have zero musical talent!  I can barely play guitar on Rock Band, and drums on Rock Band - shoot me now before I try again! DH however, insanely musically inclined. He can play any instrument he picks up, but is crazy good at drums and piano.  We hope Ty picks that up, but he already loves music so much that we don't think that'll be an issue.  (and I should point out that while I have zero talent, I LOVE music!)

And, Ty is already starting to explore music on his own!

  • Definitely! I played the piano when I was little, played the flute and violin from elementary school through high school. I sang (and still do) and danced throughout middle and high school. DD is a dancer. She starts bee-bopping as soon as she hears any music, whether its on TV, the radio, the organ at church, whistling, you name it. Heck, she dances even when there is no music playing!

  • It's a family tradition to take piano lessons beginning around age 5, and I plan to continue it. At times I really hated practicing but eventually it became something I loved and was very proud of. I would also encourage him to play a band instrument (I played flute) if he thinks he might enjoy it.

Both of my boys will be learning piano.   I played for years.   I also played flute from grade 3 to grade 12.    I also was always in choir.   I  am now a member of my church choir.   I hope that the boys will want to sing.   I'm signing them up for the children's choir at church when they are old enough.

DH played the trumpet and is hoping one of the boys will want to play that.

  • I sing and can play a tiny bit of piano and harmonica. I have a guitar, but never learned. MH plays guitar (though he hasn't picked it up in a long while). We definitely want Max to take piano when he is young (5-ish?) and then see what else he might be interested in. I sing to him all the time, so I hope he also sings. Love of music will be encouraged, for sure!

    peace,

  • My husband is a HS band director...so he has no choice, but to be involved in the music program. My hubby is hoping he will play the trombone like he does. :)

Oh and I sang in the choir all the way through college, and did musical theater in HS...I'm not a music major, I don't like performing! We sing lots of songs with LO and he goes to all of DH's band events.

  • I sang in choir, and I really want DD to sing as well (assuming she can at least carry a tune... haha).  Music is important to me and I do want to get her involved at a young age!
