I live in what I call a suburb but my husband argues is urban.  But technically Alexandria is considered a suburb of Washington DC so I went with suburb.

  • I live in a suburb and work in the city.

Love our community so much. The schools are really awesome, so people move here for the schools. Because of that, the whole community kind of exists around supporting the schools, and it's awesome!

Truthfully though, everyone in DFW kind of lives in "the metroplex" I'm guessing there are very few who don't run errands in surrounding suburbs daily.

  • What do you like about your community? We currently live in the suburbs.  I like that we're convenient to shops, groceries, parks, etc.  We're also convenient to the highway which is good.

What do you dislike about your community? I don't like that everyone is so isolated -- no one talks to their neighbors.  I also don't like how everything is so tract-y and how most of the stores, restaurants, etc. are chains.

Would you change it if you could? Yes - and we are!  We just agreed on a contract for a place in a family oriented urban neighborhood yesterday.  I'm so excited!

I agree that Alexandria is a suburb.  We live in Arlington now...also a suburb :)

  • What do you like about your community? Close to shopping/restaurants, close to freeways, great schools and basically anything you need is within a 15 min drive.

What do you dislike about your community? Nothing.  I just wish I could buy a larger home here

Would you change it if you could? I would like a bigger home in a new development but here that would be at least 100k more than I can spend.

    [Poll]

    No SS!

What do you like about your community?  I've lived there now for 5 years and actually just starting to get to know my neighbhorhood better by taking regular walks with Stella these past few weeks.  I do like that there are so many families with young children/babies as well as the older couples that have lived there for years.

What do you dislike about your community?  crime in the city is spreading further and further and it is affecting our neighborhood.  Not to mention all the trash we have living in the duplexes across the street that are called on regularly by the cops.  And our school system is not the best - outside of the trash across the street this is the biggest reason I want to move (or she's going to cathlic school)

Would you change it if you could?   Yep.  We need a bigger house with more than one bathroom.  Preferably in a much better school system.

  • I'm technically in the county/outside of city limits... But I've got a grocery store, gas stations, restaurants/fast food, and the mall/other shopping within a 5-10 minute drive... So I'd consider us more urban than suburban.

I love my neighborhood (most days). We're down in a valley and our neighbors are super friendly, although one is a little too judgey for me. We are in an established (re: older homes) neighborhood, so all of the houses look different. That's the one thing I hate about a lot of the newer homes in my area, they all look the same.

The only thing I dislike is being at the bottom of our hill people fly down our street, and we don't have any street lights on our road. It's a win/lose situation. It's great because there is no light besides the moon shining in the windows....but it's bad because the roads can be really dark and hard to see at night.

Honestly, I just wish our neighborhood had sidewalks. That's the only thing I'd change.

  • What do you like about your community? I love living in the suburbs. I hate driving in the city (one way streets, whaat?) and the country (narrow, winding roads, eeek!). I feel safe. I am close to everything. Our schools are great.

What do you dislike about your community? Houses are very pricey.

Would you change it if you could? I wish the traffic lights were timed better. Seems like a dumb complaint, but its pretty frustrating to hit a red light every half mile. Ha!

ETA: Whoops, read that last question wrong. No, I wouldn't change communities if I had a choice. But when we look at houses next year, we will likely change communities to find one in our price range...

  • What do you like about your community?  It is small and quiet.  The "city" that I live in has a community center that has activities for all ages at super affordable prices.  There are craft fairs, Easter egg hunts, things like that for all to participate in.  Plus it is half an hour outside of the actual city so it is still super easy for shopping and such

What do you dislike about your community? It is very religion based.  A religion I (personally, please forgive if you fall into this catagory) will never, ever accept and therefore I will never be fully accepted into my area.  I can live with that, but kids of that religion are taught to ask other kids what they are and then not play with the ones who are not the same.

Would you change it if you could? Please see above...

That sounds like heaven compared to here.... In several areas of our city... Every block there is a stoplight. And some are timed well, some aren't. If you are on our major highway and hit one light red... You will hit every single light red until you are through the town!

  • I grew up in the city that the suburb I live in now is next to.  I still do things in both places.  I love where we live. Really there is nothing about it that I don't like.

  • Like: it is affordable, we have nice neighbors, DH and I both have short commutes, everything we need is only a few minutes away, the metroparks are beautiful.

Dislike:  I am surrounded by Browns fans.  Ugh.

Would I change:  Yes, if DH and I could find good jobs in/near our hometown, we would move in a heartbeat.

  • We live in Orlando, this place is one big suburb without an actual city (grew up in Boston, I consider that a real city)

What do you like about your community? Its nice and while there isnt a lot of culture here there is a lot to do

What do you dislike about your community? Besides the traffic, the tourists.  Its hard to live someplace where everyone else is on vacation.  Plus adding to the traffic tourists don?t know where they are going and cause a lot of issues on the road.

Would you change it if you could? I?d like to be on vacation too

  • Urban--I live on the North side of Chicago.

I love that we can walk to great restaurants, parks, shopping, and that we have amazing zoos, museums, etc. so close by.

I don't like that we don't have a yard or garage, although we do have a patio and deck, and a parking spot behind our building. There will be nowhere for LO to play on grass unless we go to a park. Also, even though we live in a "good" neighborhood, there are always shady characters in any part of a big city.

If I could change anything, I guess I would wave my magic wand and make it actually affordable to buy a house with a yard in a nice area of the city. The prices are just crazy, in a year or so we plan to head out to the suburbs so we can buy a house.

  • Not many people live in urban St. Louis - we're all out in the burbs!  But, 20 minutes from a big city is fantastic!
  • I have donkeys and cattle in my backyard so I consider it rural. :-) I love it and would never ever change a thing except maybe add some mini donkeys and chickens in the mix.
  • I answered Suburban.  I grew up rural....so I just dislike everything and would love to move back to a farm.

I would say at least the boys get to play with the neighbor kids...but they dont.  My neighbors aren't friendly and all!

  • I live in the city, for sure. We live in a large historic district with a very active community - block parties, summer music festivals in the park, Christmas cookie exchanges, home tours. If you get involved, people are genuinely happy to get to know you. The neighborhood itself is beautiful with 100+ year old houses, huge trees and quiet streets.

Unfortunately though, the surrounding area, around our neighborhood, is rather rough and the school system is horrible.

Sometimes I wish we could move and other times I don't. I don't feel unsafe here but I do worry about our kids going to the public schools or wanting to run the neighborhood by themselves, stuff like that.

ditto this except i live in another 'burb of D.C.  we have a lawn, live in a cutesy neighborhood, etc..  some might call it urban, but i voted suburban since it's not exactly inner city.

  • I like that there are plenty of planned family type events around here

We are in the burbs (sort of near rural. This IS Texas though). I dislike not having that big city feel. Although Downtown Houston is only a 35 min drive...

Would not change it. I do not want my kids going to inner city schools or having to pay a shitton for private inside the loop. The schools here are great.

  • Like: I love it that I can just walk ouside and into civilization lol.  I honestly could not imagine living in the burbs and def not in a rural area.  I grew up in apt. buildings where everyone knew each other and it is still kind of that way here (Queens, NY)

Dislike:  Can be noisy at times, especially in the summer.  Also, I do need a nature hike fix every now and again.

Would I change:  No way.  I would like a house with a yard and a driveway though.  Parking here sucks!

  • There's nothing to do in my town. Honestly nothing. We have to drive awhile to shop at decent malls so that's mostly what I would change. The town never had activities either.
  • Ours is strange, we live in such a small country that we're only 20 min for the "big" city but we have fields and woods within 5 min walk from our house, we still have a local butchers.

What do you like about your community? everything stated above

What do you dislike about your community? nothing is open 24 hours any where near us (make that in the whole country)

Would you change it if you could? probably not

  • I live in the country! LOL Pretty Rural... 3 acre wooded lot.

What do you like about your community? I love that I am able to have a camp fire and shoot off fireworks at 3am if I wish without having the cops being called. Yep, just like the hicks do! LOL Yes, we had some epic parties in our day. We even had a band play into the night.

What do you dislike about your community? Driving to get to places! LOL But they recently just put a Walmart around 10 minutes away so that is pretty awesome!

Would you change it if you could? Nope... The only thing I worry about is when DS grows up. We are pretty far from our Neighbors. When I was growing up I lived in the country too, but there was neighborhood kids that I played with. That is why it is important to me to give DS a sibling.
