those who have LO's who sleep through the night...

was it a gradual transition? or was it like a switch? and if so WTF is that switch?! lol!

J has slept through the night maybe 4-5 times over the past 3 weeks. we'll get a night or 2 of solid sleep and then a night or 3 of constant wake ups. i know he's teething still, so maybe this is why?

Re: those who have LO's who sleep through the night...

  • We did Ferber and since about night 5 of Ferber, the switch flipped. When we know he is teething/uncomfortable we will give tylenol or advil...

    Teething could be the culprit.

  • DD has always STTN with just some whining in the middle of the night for a pacifier between 4-5 months.  Once she figured out how to put it back in herself we haven't heard from her since.

  • Ferber was the switch for us. He's been STTN now since about 6.5 months old.

  • Em has always slept through the night. We didn't do anything. When she does cry on a occasion, we just leave her and she falls back to sleep.  This used to happen a couple times a night, but she knows we aren't going to come, so it is very rare now. Sometimes we see her awake on the monitor in the night, but she doesn't cry. She just sucks her thumb and goes back to sleep. If we went in there to check on her or tell her she was fine, then she would cry more and expect us to get her!

  • Over his whole life, so far, DS has gone through several phases of sleeping through the night, usually lasting for a few weeks at a time, and then reverts for some reason. He is currently teething and waking up once per night with an occassional bonus full night of sleep about once a week. STTN seems more like a temporary state than something that switches and stays that way.
  • We did Ferber but then found out her reflux was bad, then teething, stomach virus, cold....  Finally two weeks ago she started sleeping through the night.... It's been beautiful.... Now another cold...
  • sigh. we've tried ferber... he works himself up to the point of making him self sick. i'm hoping that this STTN trend continues...

  • Our LO started with 8 hour stretches at 8 weeks.  However, it was totally inconsistent from then until 6 months when we decided to do Ferber.  Some nights it would be 3 hour stretches, some nights 10.  At 6 months, we did Ferber, and by the second night she was doing an 11.5 hour night, which she has continued to do consistently.

  • We sleep trained using a method similar to Ferber's.  Saved our sanity and made everyone happier!
  • It was automatic.  For the first 3 months he was sick and once we got him on his special formula and his Zantac it was like one night he just started sleeping through the night.  Gradually it has gotten longer and longer.  He started off sleeping 8 hours straight now he sleeps 12 hours straight.

  • We're just lucky with ds. He's always been a great sleeper. Since shortly after we put him in his crib around 8 weeks he's sttn. He may have woke for one feeding for a month or so after that. I am very thankful for him being a great sleeper. He found his fingers and I think that's what's helped him since he can soothe himself.

  • It was gradual...she settled herself into sleeping  8/9p - 6a around 3 months. Her sleep and wake up times were erratic until a little after 7 months. Then it was like a switch. All of a sudden she had to be in bed at 7 or 7:30 or else she lost her little mind. We can stretch her bedtime past 7 if we're out somewhere and she's interested in what's going on, but we haven't gone later than 9.

She has been waking up a bit with teething and standing, but nothing crazy. We usually just have to give her a little belly pat and/or lay her back down and she's good to go.

  • she pretty much just started it at around three and a half months. every so often we will have a crappy night that I blame on teething or being over tired. Crappy as in 2-3 quick wakings that nursing knocks her out again tight away. I guess you could say that when it happened it was gradual because he went from having a 4 am waking to not having one until around 9am. after her morning waking she does go back to sleep for a couple more hours.

This is the same for us.
