Trouble TTC

Test for PCOS

I've got a long backstory that I've posted a couple of times, but don't post often enough for people to know me...

Anyway, I've just moved to Ireland and went in to have my progesterone level checked 7 dpo to see if I ovulated on my own. First shocker was that she said it would take a week or two to come back! Holy smokes.

While I was there the doctor asked if she could also run the test for PCOS (even though I have regular periods, gotten pregnant twice on my own) I was like, sure, whatever. Now I'm wondering, is there actually a blood test for PCOS? I thought it was more of a look at the symptoms to make a diagnosis kind of thing.

Anyway, I have an appointment with an RE but it's still a month and a half away.

Re: Test for PCOS

  • I believe there is a blood test. My doctor used my symptoms and an ultrasound to dx me with it.

  • My obgyn told me that there's NOT just one test...its more like a collective of symptoms and a ruling out of other issues (diabetes, thyroid problems, etc).  Maybe they were just checking your hormone levels?  (Elevated levels of male hormones usually indicate a possibility of PCOS.)

  • Blood tests are part of the workup for PCOS, but there is not one test that confirms it on its own. Like PP said, she will probably want to check hormone levels (elevated testosterone is usually an indicator of PCOS) and glucose/insulin levels.

  • I would wait for the RE to do it. PCOS bloodwork has to be done on CD3, so what your obgyn is running on 7dpo won't be accurate for a PCOS dx.  For a diagnosis, it's an ultrasound and a range of bloodwork tests as well as a full picture of previous medical history.

  • Thanks for all the info. She also told me that she could put me on another round of Clomid, but that they don't typically do any monitoring. Ummm... I'll just wait, thanks.

I guess I'll see what she comes back with. I figured it would be more info to take with me to the RE when I go in May.

    Thanks.
