Depth perception

My daughter is almost 16 months old and her teacher told me she is concerned that she may have problems with her depth perception.  She says she runs into things and steps on objects and falls.  She steps on her friends legs too.  When she asks her to let her put her shoes on Natalie holds up her foot from across the room.  I don't want to overreact but I don't want to make excuses either.  I am a kindergarten teacher and I know that the way her teacher is saying it to me is the way I would explain something if I really thought there was a problem.  When I watch her she seems fine to me.  A little bit toddler clumsy, but otherwise she moves well.  She started walking early (8 1/2 months).  She likes to dance.  She can spot a crumb from across the room.  The teacher says she is concerned that Natalie may be able to see but not judge the distance an object is from her.  What should I think about all of this?

I would take her to the eye doctor.  Do either you or your husband need glasses?  If so I would definitely think that she may need to go to the eye doctor.

I would probably mention it at her next well visit. I hope it's just normal toddler clumsy!

I would just mention it to see what the doc has to say about it.

My husband and I both wear glasses.  My eyesight isn't too bad.  I didn't need them until my late teens.  My depth perception is poor because of an astigmatism, but it just means I am not too good at sports.  My husband's eyesight is worse but mainly because of an eye injury.  So, yes, we do need glasses but we aren't bats.  It wasn't anything that affected us as toddlers...well, that I know of I suppose.

It doesn't hurt to take her to the eye doctor.  I am not sure if you need a referral at that age, so I would just like PP said mention it to your Pedi.  My cousin needed glasses at 12 months, so I wouldn't rule it out completely.
