No flaming please

This might sound very silly...did any of you have deli meats while pregnant?

I have been craving it soo much and keep debating with myself if I should or not, my mom ate whatever she wanted while she was pregnant and so did my sister and she has a 4 yr old and 4 yrs ago deli meat was ok...

please share

Re: No flaming please

  • As long as it was from a reputable place, I ate it. No worries! Enjoy some deli meat!

  • I ate Subway all the time. I always got toasted subs, but still, I think it's fine.

  • I did.  When it was from my cafe at work, I had no qualms about eating it every now and then.  When I got it from say Subway (I always get the Club) I always had it toasted when pregnant.

  • I had one italian sub while I was pregnant because I craved it so badly. Other than that I really didn't.

  • I was obsessed with Subway.  I ate it everyday for like 2 weeks lol.  My dr said places like Subway that have a high turn over rate are fine, it's not sitting there very long unused.  Enjoy!

  • I did. I ate my subway heated, but I ate bologna at home cold. I'm gross - I can't live without bologna.
  • I mean in all seriousness, the chances are VERY SLIM that you'd catch listeria from deli meat.  Could it happen?  Sure.  Of course.  You could be the one person it happens to.  But chances are pretty high that everything would be fine and you wouldn't have infected meat.

Um. Yes.  I would have starved if I couldn't eat sandwiches for lunch.

  • I ate all kinds of deli meat.  I actually craved ham and bologna sandwiches with lettuce on white bread (not the 2 together) and had one almost every night.

If you're too worried, just heat it up.

  • I was told it was okay to eat it every now and then, just not every single day you are pregnant.... I think my OBGYN told me that because I had a look of horror when the nurse told me to avoid deli meat. Surprise

  • I avoided it during the first trimester... but after that I ate at places like Subway and Jimmy John's maybe 3-4 times a month. Sometimes toasted, sometimes not. If I bought meat from the grocery deli, I did heat it for like 15 seconds. Probably overcautious, I'm sure you can enjoy a nice sandwich :)

This. I didn't even heat it up or have a toasted sub. I let myself have one Jimmy John's sub a week.

  • I ate it on a relatively regular basis.  By regular - 1-2x a week, but I've never eaten a lot of lunch meat sandwiches anyway!  When I asked my OB he said it was fine but his major concern was not listeria - he'd rather I not because of the sodium and preservatives!

I could not have survived my pregnancy without Subway.  I didn't eat it everyday maybe 2-3 days/week.  I craved it so much!  I did stay away from the pre-packed meats (in those plastic containers) and only ate fresh cut/shaved meat from the deli, usually turkey.

Me too! I like my sandwiches better hot anyway, and I read that listeria dies at a relatively low temp, so I didn't hesitate to pig out!

    Yes

Listeria is so rare. And you have just as much a chance of catching it through veggies as deli meat.

  • I asked my doctor about because my SIL told me I wasn't supposed to eat it and my doctor said it was fine to eat and that she lived on Subway during her pregnancies. I never heated up my deli meat unless I was eating a hot sandwich.

  • I ate it all the time.  I figured if i was going to avoid deli meat because of listeria, I should also avoid soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt, and that just wasn't going to happen.

This, we have a butcher near our house, and I would just get the cold cuts there and make my own sandwich. I never trusted places like Subway, or Blimpie.

  • I ate deli turkey sandwhichs 4-5x/week while pregnant. My OB just asked that I heat it for 30 seconds. When I would bring it home from the supermarket I would just heat the whole pound and throw it in the fridge.

  • My OB told me that as long as it was from a reputable place, somewhere with a high turnover where they were likely to be slicing the meat frequently and not letting it sit out, it was totally fine. All through my last pregnancy I ate Jimmy Johns (which she specifically recommended) and deli meat from the grocery store (I just asked them to slice it for me instead of giving me what was already out). I was a little leery about Subway since I don't think they fresh slice their meat, but I'm weirdly cautious about these things.

  • No flames here, I definitely ate deli meats while pregnant.  And lots and lots of Blue cheese - seriously, I wouldn't have made it 9 months without.  I say go for it.  And yeah, you can always heat it up.  Sometimes it's even better that way!

I always thought the "danger" of deli meat was the nitrates?  Either way, as everyone said, the odds are that everything will be fine.  I bought the "naturals" brand when I craved it since they use only natural ingredients like sea salt and lemon juice.

  • Rarely.  If I did order from Jimmy John's or some other place, I would nuke it and then eat it.    I was pretty by the book when it came to the "no no" list of foods.
