Dreaming of lotto winnings

The Mega Mil jackpot reached $474M. I text H that we could DTD on top of our tix tonight b/c it's the closest we will be to that kind of money. Wink #dirtymoney

I've been daydreaming what I would do w/ the money. WWYD? I'm assuming most of us would quit our jobs....

Re: Dreaming of lotto winnings

  • Lol, we were JUST talking about that at work.  I can think of a million things to spend that many millions on!

  • That is soooo much money.  It would bring a few problems with it I'm sure but I think I could figure out a way to manage.  Wink

First I would stay quiet about it for as long we possible while we got our ducks in a row.  I really can't think much beyond that because that is truly life altering $.

  • We've got a pool going at work - I think Friday's drawing is up to 500mil; even split between everybody here, its a HUGE chunk.

And, I just found my dream house earlier this week - and its 4mil!  So, I'm set!

  • I'd be professional and give two weeks notice and then I'd be out of there.

Then, I'd buy a house and start trying to get pregnant with number 2.

  • I'd be torn about quitting working entirely. I know that my DH would quit working, and I think the two of us together would drive each other batty. I'd probably work in some capacity for free for either a government or nonprofit. I would def. give at least 2 weeks notice at my current job, or work part time until they found a replacement. There would be many tears shed about leaving my job- I really love it- however knowing myself there's no way I could keep my head in the game.

I would buy a bigger house. Decorate it. Donate our old house to a family in need. Travel. Hire all kinds of therapists for DS. Organize a playdate group for moms of kids with special needs so we can socialize our kids together. Have another kid.

I know I'd have all kinds of problems with family members asking for money.

  • DH & I would quit our jobs, take the kids and hide out for about a year until it was forgotten about us winning (not that it would ever be completely forgotten).  Before we even went to claim the prize I would have my lawyer and financial advisor lined up.

I would definitely look into setting up our own non-profit foundation so we could contribute towards several causes that we feel very strongly about.I would make sure my parents and siblings were well taken care of. I would also make sure to invest a good amount wisely so we would always be in good shape.

Oldest DS is 15 -  I would definitely homeschool him for a bit or find an exclusive private school because the little tramps at his school would be all over him trying to get knocked-up so they could collect a big payday on us.  Plus I would really have a concern with someone trying to kidnap one of my boys for the ransom.  Yeah - I think money like that would bring some paranoia in my life but I am willing to risk it :)

  • I would buy this ranch:

It's only two hours away. And I would raise draft horses and llamas and teach private creative writing workshops out of my home and run a writers' residency :-) Oh, and I would create an endowment for a bunch of things--my magazine, scholarships for writers, etc.

I'd probably stick out my job long enough to train a replacement.  Everyone is underwater enough without me flipping the bird and walking out.  I'd have a trust formed and financial managers and a good tax attorney retained before I ever claimed it.  And I'd start a charitable foundation to help folks who suffer catastrophic or chronic medical conditions or illnesses with their medical bills and probably work for that afterwards.  And likely have to move to a gated community as I'm not in one of the states that lets you claim the prize anonymously.

1/2 time or no work at all for me. Buy or build in our dream spot and take a vacation with a nanny!
