If you have use it or loose it vacy time...

How much do you have this year and what do you plan on doing with it?

I have almost 4 weeks vacay that is use it or loose it and I have no idea what to do with it.  DH never takes vacay unless we travel.  He only gets 1 week anyway.  Plus I made a promise to DH no more vacays until we are debt free. So now I have all this time and no idea what to do with it.

At my old job I loved the fact I could roll it over for something big or for a nice payout when I left but no such luck here.

  • We get 2 weeks a year, and we can roll over all 2 weeks for 1 year. The first year I started, I took no vaca so that I'd always have 2 weeks of use it or lose it and always have an extra banked two weeks.

But...we have no maternity leave paid here :( So I took my sick time + that 4 weeks of vacation (plus a few unpaid weeks) for my leave. So..I'm thinking I'm to hang on to as much as possible of what I accrue this year, so that I'll have this year's 2 in the bank to use next year.

  • I think I've got almost three weeks all told to use this year...but not really a 'use it or lose it' situation for me.  We are actually in the process of converting all of our time off to PTO and for me, being an hourly employee at this time, I can actually get up to 24 unused hours paid out at the end of the year.

But anyway, that wasn't your question.  If I was in a 'use it or lose it' situation...I think I'd take sporadic days off throughout the summer to enjoy with Stella - the zoo, local parks, botanical garden, etc.

Sounds fun.  I would love to do it with LO and DH but he can't/wont.

  • I have 17 days plus a birthday holiday that is all use it or lose it. I'm taking a few days during dds spring break and were supposed to go camping. I'm using a week for ds surgery, a few days in December when school and daycare are closed and a few sporadic days here and there for camping trips. It's a pita to get days off because it can't conflict with anyone else in a similar position with this company.

  • I have 2 weeks of vacay. I'm using 1 week when I move to get settled into the new house and the rest just as days off to do things with LO or visit family in Canada.

I know there is some stuff that DH is not going to want to do with us, so I'll go it alone with Stella.  Originally, though, I was planning on DH leaving a week after Stella's birthday and then not seeing him until next spring.

A lot of people I work with will save it up like that and then take every Friday off during the summer. So they have long 3 day weekends when its nice to do things with their kids.  I wish I could save it up like that.  I saved mine before for maternity leave and now I seem to have to take a day once a month for random things we have to do.

  • I can only carry over 40hrs at the end of the year, since I've already accrued that much I'll be taking a day or two here and there to spend with Liam.  DH and I agreed that we don't want to take a full blown vaca this year (DH only gets ~1 week/year).

My bday is next month and I'm totally taking a PTO day to myself (Liam will be with Gma)...hair cut/color, pedi....it's going to be amazing!!

  • We get about 22 days a year/176 hours. only 40 hours of that can be rolled over. I never use it all, but I am starting to just take one or 2 fridays a month off to use it. Can you try that?

  • i have 11 days to use bu August 30 - since my job is part time - that will be about 3.5 weeks off (I work 3 days a week and I have already used 1 day)

Can you just take off and have the time at home with LO - DH and I may take 1 week together - may 2 if I am over teh moon lucky - but I will defintely be using these days up even if i am sitting on my ass at home rather then lose them

  • My husband uses a week up by taking every Friday off in August. I think that's a great way to spend your vacation time. Take Fridays off so that you get long weekends!

My company shuts down from Christmas to New Year's....and I think that's a great week to have off. So I would suggest taking that week off.

I could but I was thinking of a more fun way to use it Smile

  • Because of the way they do ML around here I burned through almost all of my vacation on ML.... However, I think I'm back up to having about 2 weeks off again. We can accrue up to 6 weeks before we lose it.

That being said... I used to take Friday and Monday off and take extended weekend trips. A favorite spot to visit over the weekend is Saint Charles, MO (where is Telly21182, I'm sure she knows exactly where I'm talking about!) to relax and shop in a cute little town! This year we're taking a family (MH, me, K, and my parents) vacation to the mountains and staying in a cabin.
