suction bottom plates

Are any of you trying to teach your LOs to use a plate? Has anyone used these suction bottomed plates?

DH thinks it would be a good idea 'cause we could start giving her a plate (mostly at restaurants) and it wouldn't get thrown on the floor. I think that suction bottoms cannot withstand a toddler's strength and it will be another thing we drag around with us that does not work. I told him I'd ask to see if anyone has used them and has any input.

Re: suction bottom plates

  • Haven't used a suction bottom, because I don't want to test something new like that at a restaurant, and if it does work really well at home she'll probably jack up her high chair.  We use these for restaurants: https://www.amazon.com/Sesame-Street-Disposable-Placemats-Reusable/dp/B000R7L80C

The ones we have are about the size of a Chipotle burrito, only mostly flat (if that makes sense).  We have a small reusable bag we keep toys and stuff in for eating out, so that instead of trying to come up with, OH! and don't forget a bib! And maybe this toy! etc, we can just grab her little bag & go.  The bag of placemats fits really easily.

  • My mom got DD a suction bottom plate, I think it was Nuk brand.  It doesn't work, suction sucks.  Have you tried just a regular plate with her?

I never gave DD a plate until my mom watched her and gave her a plate at lunch.  She said she did great with it.  I just bought some cheap Walmart plastic plates, they work great and are dishwasher safe.

  • We have a Summer Infant Tiny Diner placemat that we usually take to restaurants and works great. The times we've given her a plate, she picks it up and throws it. I figured the suction would be terrible, but DH thought it might be a good idea to get her used to a plate.

  • I use the seasame street matts in public, the suction plates do not work at home. Whitney can pop them off if she tries hard enough, so I say...why bother.

  • We had one with Aiden that broke in the dishwasher. We've always given Emily a plate and she bangs it when she's done but doesn't throw it. Of course she never leaves anything on it to make a mess anyway.

  • We had a suction bottom plate that ds was able to pop off, and then thought it was fun to play with.  When we give him a regular plate then he just leaves it still on his plate.

  • She can get the suction ones off.  We just put her food on a disposable place mat.
  • I use the disposable placemats too although JT has now figured out how to peel them off....heh.
