IV's

I do not want an IV at the hospital during labor or delivery unless I actually need one... is this typically an issue? I am fine with them starting a line but I dont actually want to be hooked up. I want to move freely. anyone have issues with this? Is this something that you typically just sign off on?

Re: IV's

  • just tell your nurse that you dont want one. she should respect that.

if she insists, ask her for a heplock/ saline lock- it is an IV without the tubing attached, that can be easily hooked up in an emergency.

that being said, any nurse worth their salt should be able to start a quick IV anyway...

  • Depends upon hospital 'policy.' It wasn't an issue at the hospital where I delivered, but it is at several in the area.
  • It was policy at mine for a heplock, then IV if necessary. But, I was too close to delivery to get one. Ended up having a straight IV, and yes, I needed it. I was severely dehydrated.
  • In the event that you hemorrhage it is best to have IV access mostly to save your life (pitocin, blood products etc)! It can be very annoying but once your contractions kick in it will be the least on your mind.
