To Dopple or not to Dopple?

Hi all. Since this is my first, I am learning about all kinds of new things, like this doppler for example. I am debating on whether to purchase or not.  Can anyone pelase give me the positive/negative about these? Also, when is the earliest you can hear it on a home Doppler? Thanks :)

  • I loved my doppler! I don't know how I lived without it with the 1st one. I bought my doppler at 10wks I was picking up BPM but I didn't hear a heart beat till I was 14wks. I used it everyday till I started to feel him move. Smile

  • No negatives... I loooove my Doppler!!!! I worry about every little twinge and pull and being able to listen to the heartbeat makes me feel much better... We heard the hb at 9w5d but it won't read the exact bpm yet.

  • I have 2 friends who are OB/Gyns and both strongly advised me against it. They both said it's a great way to drive yourself nuts, get potentially inaccurate information, etc. They also reminded me that in a few weeks you'll start to feel the baby kick and  that's a free way of knowing the baby is ok.

Do what you want, of course, but I have felt a bit "pressured" after reading a lot of comments on here and as it turns out none of my real life friends have done it!

Just another view- either way I am sure it's fine. I think of it as a neat toy, more or less but I know I'd literally go crazy with it. For me I'd rather leave it to the experts.

Don't do it - you'll drive yourself crazy if you can't find the heartbeat for some reason. Really and truly - just hold out until each of your appointments. I promise - they will check the heartbeat EVERY time you go to the doctor until that kiddo is born.

THIS! It's a waste of money and will drive you crazy!

  • I personally bought a doppler after my miscarriage. It was a nice way to get reassurance. You have to be able to not freak out though if you can't find it immediately. A lot of women can't find it until they are 11-13 weeks. Its a nice transitional way of being able to check before feeling the baby move.

I disagree with other posters as well. It never drove me crazy, but I also didn't do it excessively.

  • I'm over here lurking :)

I had a doppler with my DD and loved it! I had an early miscarriage before I became pregnant with DD and because of the miscarriageI was so nervous about the pregnancy until I could feel the baby move.

I didn't think it was difficult to find the baby's HB after about 11 or 12 weeks and as a FTM it was so exciting! I'm excited to use it again with our next LO!

  • *lurking*

I loved my doppler. I was able to hear the heartbeat every day starting at 9 weeks. It was definitely not a waste of money, in fact I'd say it was the best pregnancy product I bought. It really gave me peace of mind. You'll notice that the nay-sayers are ones who don't own a doppler. Wink

I'm joking. But seriously, I think it's a great product.

  • My friend is sending me her doppler in the mail next week and she had all positive things to say about it. They loved hearing baby's heartbeat! I think she said they could hear it well after 12 weeks:)
