Drop in weight percentages?

We had Caleb's 9 month appointment on Friday. He is growing and doing things like he should. But in weight, he had been at about the 50th percentile. This time, he dropped to tne 25th percentile! The pedi said he wasn't worried, that this often happens to ebf babies when they get mobile. No need to supplement. Has this happened to anyone else? BTW, he is 19 pounds even and 28 inches long

Re: Drop in weight percentages?

  • totally normal. DD dropped from 60-70th percentiles to the 25th from 4 to 6 months. She's happy and healthy, just a peanut, 17 lbs and 27 inches.

  • Do you know if your dr uses the WHO or CDC charts?  This graphic is a good visual of the CDC charts (formula) v. the WHO charts (BF).  He may not have dropped much at all on the WHO!

  • I think it sounds normal. My dd also dropped-from 90 to 75th percentile. Her pedi was not concerned.

  • Totally normal, and I wish my SIL's pedi was like yours! Her pedi was fairly anti-EBF it seems... Her son was in the 90th percentile, and then started dropping once he became mobile... She threatened to turn her into CPA (I think that's right) for starving him! Sad

Thanks for this link. I don't know which they use (and I always forget to ask when I am at the pedi appt), but it does look more normal whe I look at the one by the WHO!

I don't mind that he dropped so much since he is healthy, but his daddy is 6 feet 4 inches, and will not be happy if his son inhereited mom's genes (I and 5 feet 2 inches!)!

  • DS dropped from 90th to 75th between 6 mo and 9 mo.  Our pedi wasn't worried either, but I was!  Glad to hear it sounds normal - I was expecting it a little later once he starts walking.
  • The current CDC chart uses both formula fed and breastfed babies, in the ratio that they exist in the U.S. That's the one my pedi uses, but they're aware that BF babies slow down on that chart in the later part of the first year. My LO was 75th for weight at 4 months, 60th at 6 months, and now 35th at 9 months. The pedi is not concerned, since he's mobile now and breastfed. Honestly, he still looks like a chunky monkey to me, I can't imagine what he'd look like if he was still in the 75th!

  • We've had some weight struggles but they seem to have leveled out.  Our pedi showed me the growth chart and also plotted her the WHO growth chart (which is different).  He told me that generally babies in the US are just bigger then the rest of the world (mainly due to breastfeeding and other cultural things).  On the US chart DD is around the 5th percentile and she was way higher on the WHO - like maybe close to 20, I can't remember exactly.

He also told me that he expects babies to drop a bit between 6 and 9 months when they start eating more solids and getting more mobile.

  • Yep.  In fact I expected it.  Audrey used to be 90s for heigh and 70s for weight.  At her 9 months, she was 55 for both.  She is also ebf.  Her pedi was not concerned.

Same exact thing happened to DS, his pedj is also not worried and said he actually gained more than he thought he would given he is EBF. DS is 19lbs 2oz and 28 1/2 in.

Our pedi said exactly this.  She dropped as well in weight % but jumped in height%

  • Yup! It's Normal- DD went from 90% weight and height to 50% weight and 90% height. Pedi didn't even mention the drop in %. Try not to stress about it!

Totally normal. Caroline dropped from the 87% down to 50.  No worries from her pedi at all.

  • Ash dropped from the 90th to the 80th, and he is no longer EBF. His Dr. said it is because they start to "drop" weight as they are more mobile. They are just getting more workouts. Nothing to worry about.
  • N has dropped at each appointment he's had so far.  He started in the 88% and he's down to the 47% .  My pedi said he's growing just fine.

  • Thanks for all the replies ladies! It's good to know that Caleb is not the only baby who has dropped in weight percentages!  Now if only mamma could do the same...

  • Same thing with us and DS is even on high calorie formula.  He dropped from the 60th percentile to the 13th pecentile.  I think I am more worried than the Dr. is.
