Working Moms

Is this manageable?

How do you ladies find time for the gym?  I'm having difficulty this past 2months getting my arse there.

I *have* to make this work somehow, I have to make the gym a priority again.  I haven't gained more than 3lbs back (desk job), but I have lost all tone in my body...so I needed to reassess my schedule more.

DH goes to work at 5:30 and doesn't get home until between 4p - 6p (it depends on his day).  He needs his downtime too, and his outlets.  I simply don't have the energy at 8p to make the gym work - but I DO at 6p.  I'm going stir crazy, because I have yet to expell my energy, I have yet to find an outlet.  Family babysitting DS is not an option here.

Here is what I'm thinking...If DH puts DS to bed 3x per week (at 7p), I could head out to the gym for an hour at say 630p.  The only downside is this will run into DS's bedtime,   If DH is willing to put him to bed on those days, I'm willing to do bath & dinner, etc. before DH gets home, this way all he needs to do is storytime, etc and bed at 7p

Dinner will be ready and on the table before I leave for the gym, I just won't be able to eat it with them 3x per week.  DS gets out at 2:45p so I think this is manageable, as long as I plan ahead.

WDYT?

Re: Is this manageable?

  • Definitely try it and see how it goes. I take a long lunch at work and go to the gym, followed by a quick shower and eat at my desk. It was the only time I could find that was stable and I wouldn't talk myself out of the gym all day. Keep that in mind if 6 pm becomes too chaotic w/ your schedules.

  • Definitely sounds like an option! 2 other things you could try: Depending on when DS wakes up, you could get up at 5:30 with DH (or earlier or later) and do a workout at home. If you aren't looking for cardio, you don't really need much space to do situps, pushups, pullups, squats, handweights, etc. You could even get a 20-30 minute video to give you more structure. OR, depending on age of DS, you could join a gym with babysitting services and work out during the day while DH is at work. When my daugter was about 1, I started working out at the gym not becuase I particularly wanted to get into shape, but just because I wanted an hour break for myself! (I did get in shape though :)
  • Is it not an option to find a gym with childcare? I know not everyone is thrilled with that, but it'd be worth it imo. Or go on your lunch hour?
  • Do you have a place outdoors to run with a jogging stroller?  I haven't gotten back into my gym routine yet, but I do take DS in the jogger and run about 3 miles through my neighborhood a few times a week.  I also do the 30 Day Shred a couple of times a week while LO laughs at me and watches.  When I am able to get back in my gym routine, this is our plan:

Monday & Wednesday:  I pick DS up from daycare on the way home, nurse him, and go to the gym as soon as DH gets home. DH will get dinner started.

Tuesdays & Thursdays:  DH will go to the gym on his way home from work.  I will get dinner started.

Fridays will be our days off.  We are pretty good about going on the weekend and taking turns.  When he's walking, I will take him with us and use the gym daycare, but I don't feel comfortable sending him before that.  I also don't want to use it during the week.  I'd hate to pick him up from daycare then put him in another daycare. We also use the crock pot quite a bit for cooking or make casseroles the night before that just have to be heated up.
