Interview on Wed. - 14 weeks pregnant

Hi ladies! I've posted a time or two. I know this subject has been talked about a few times. I have an interview on Wednesday and will be 14 weeks pregnant. I do not plan to disclose my pregnancy at this time, however, if all goes well, there may be a 2nd interview, phone call with an offer, etc. At what point exactly do you disclose this info? Wait until there is basically an offer on the table? Or maybe at a 2nd interview? It is definitely something I feel like I should share before hired (if that does indeed happen!) b/c I think the employer should know that I will need 6-8 weeks off work in 6 months. It's only curteous and I feel they would need to know if I needed off for that long for any other reason.

Thoughts? Any GOOD experiences in a similar situation?

  • I would disclose only after I have a written job offer.  And not before.  You don't want it to be a reason that they would find another reason to not offer you the position.

When you have a job offer, that's the same time that they should be more detailed about what benefits they offer and what their leave policy is.  You might not get 6-8 weeks paid and you'll want to consider that when you are trying to figure out whether to take the job.

  • Thanks for your opinion! I feel bad keeping any kind of secret from them, but I also dont want them to not hire me b/c of it (although I know you legally cant do that...) I will wait until there is an offer on the table.

The good thing is that my current STD policy can travel with me to a new job. I signed up for that a long time in advance so that I could have it for this pregnancy, and maxed it out! :-) I wouldnt get much more than STD if I stayed with my current position. I would have maybe 2 weeks of PTO/Sick time to use. That is a plus and all, but getting a position that gives me my nights/weekends/holidays back is priceless! :)

  • My only thought is that if this job is with a new company and is able to offer FMLA to their employees, then you wouldn't be there long enough to qualify for FMLA. So legally they don't have to hold your position for you. But I think most employers would hold your position because of the expense of having to rehire another employee.

This is another concern of mine as well. Just gotta hope and pray (if I get it) that its a company that wouldnt do that to me. Just one of those risks I may have to take!
