My husband and I are not planning on starting our family for another year or two, but we've already picked out our dream names. We love them, and although we know it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, I would like to see your opinions because they are extremely original:
Speed Thomas and Havoc William
We are huge fans of original names but chose to give them "normal" middles names if they grow up not wanting to be so different. The middle names are both grandfathers first names.
As you can see we're hoping for two boys, don't have a definite on girls names, but we kind of like Emerson.
Go ahead and tell me what you really think.
Re: my unique name list, opinions please.
I give you points for creativity! Personally, I don't like "Havoc" because to me it has a negative connotation. (Like he will "wreak havoc" on everything).
As much as it's cool to think of really different names, think of how it may affect them in the future, when they apply for jobs, etc.
What about switching and having those names for middle names?
First pregnancy - blighted ovum, miscarriage at 10 weeks, Apr./May 2012
Second BFP 9/19/12 - Hoping for our Rainbow Baby!
Burned by the Bear
Speed makes me think of drugs, and Havoc = destruction and chaos.
They are cool names for American Gladiators, not for babies.
I LOVE unusual names, whether they are from mythology (Apollo, Orion, Odin as mentioned in a recent thread), words made into names (Fable, Boheme, Reverie from GGC; all words that where chosen based on their lovely meanings), or even just less common names (our current frontrunner baby names are Aurelia and Atticus).
If I were you, I'd keep looking.
I never really think of word-names as 'original'. The words speed and havoc already have meaning and significance, and so people will already have associations with these names.
And in this case...I don't think the associations people will have are very good. Speed just reminds me of heroin, and havoc is a bad thing... I don't know why you would want to name kids after either of those things.
Plus, they both scream "trying too hard to be cool and edgy". Which is of course, neither cool nor edgy.

On the off chance this isn't mud, can you imagine hiring someone with the name Havoc? How about your daughter bringing home a guy named Speed?
This, except speed is meth. Either way, it is an illicit drug. These sound more like nicknames someone earns that given names. What if Speed is actually a slow mover, or Havoc wants to become a priest? I don't think those names would serve them well at all.
damn me and my straight-edge ways. As I was typing I was trying to figure out if Speed was heroin or cocaine. You can tell I've never stepped a toe out of line, huh?
Well, you were on the right track. Speed= Meth, but a Speedball= putting heroin (downer) and cocaine (upper) in the same syringe.
I think I watch too much Intervention.

I truly hope so.
I love unique names, particularly word names, but come on. Speed? Havoc?
Speed is a drug. I don't feel like I should have to tell you this, but it's on your baby name list.
Havoc is a negative word, for one, and also sounds like a Marvel Comic villian. Oh, wait, he IS a comic book character: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havok_(comics)
There are some awesome word names out there, but please keep in mind that your child is a person. Both names are kind of cute on hyper dogs, but not on people who have to, you know, eventually meet and introduce themselves to other people.
As far as girls' suggestions go, are you familar with Girl's Gone Child and My Cakies blogs? Both bloggers named their daughters unique word names. GGC's children are Archer (boy), Fable, Reverie and Boheme [bo-em] (Revi and Bo are twins). Cakies' girls are True, Brave, Soul and Glow. I love all of them and think they work in the real world.
Or bunnies. Your kids seem to be happy with them. Speed is a great name for a bunny.

Well, not going to say im suprised by the responses. And no, everyone, this is not a joke, my husband and I actually both love these names.
Speed does not refer to drugs, if you look it up Speed actually means "success" and "good fortune".
As for Havoc, I think it is a beautiful name. Who cares about the meaning. My name means "boomerang", doesn't mean I am one.
This has to be MUD.
If not, OP, please don't procreate. The gene pool is already too full with stupid people.
So then why did you ask us?
Both of these names screan "trying too hard".
I sincerely hope your tastes change by the time you are ready to start a family!
But what matters is not what is in the dictionary. It matters what others THINK it means. We told you what those names mean to us, strangers that may one day be your kid's teachers or bosses. If I saw Havoc on my roster, I may unconciously already write him off as a trouble maker. I'd assume Speed was hyper. Because speed most commonly refers to how fast something moves. And drugs. Those may not be fair assumptions, but it is only human nature to make judgments given the information at hand. If this is the info you give me about your kid, then that's the assumptions we have all made.
Really, every kid wants to be Batman, but no professional man wants to be saddled with a comic book character name.
My name means princess or something like that. No, Im not a princess. However, my name is not a direct translation in the language that most of the country speaks. I wouldn't go to France and name my daughter Catin. Yes, it can mean "baby doll" and be a term of endearment, but there it is used mostly to describe prostitutes. Speed and Havoc are English words that have direct connotations in modern English. You can't really get around that.
However, "Havoc" isn't a name...it's just a word. Why don't you just name your kid "Computer" or "Devil" (since you don't care about meanings...) At least your parents didn't name you "Boomerang." And as a hiring manager, I would immediately toss out any resume that belonged to someone named "Havoc" or "Speed". I wouldn't want someone with such a ridiculous name representing my company. And I know a lot of hiring managers that do the same things, regardless of the qualifications of the candidate. It's super nice of you to set your future kids up like that.
Just get off the board. I still think this is MUD and you're trying to stir people up. Because you seem to understand that stupidity (Your names being the stupidity in questions) riles people up.
Havoc kinda like davey havok of AFI?
No.
Seriously. Speed and Havoc are awful. They are not names, they are words, and words that don't necessarily carry great connotations. Drugs and destruction? These names scream 'trying too hard'. The only place a weird "name" like this is acceptable, imo, is in the middle name spot.
Very well said.
See, now I'm even more convinced this is MUD beause she asked us flat-out to let her have it, and now she's whining about it.
OP, did you REALLY expect us to applaud your creativity and gush about how fabulous these names are? If so, you are sadly deluded.
The HUGE difference here is that your parents did not name you boomerang, which is what you are trying to do to your offspring.
Please stop trying to be creative and think about actual human beings with these names.
I don't know what "MUD" is, but my post is genuine. I asked you to "let me have it" because I know there are people who will oppose the names. I'm not whining about people being offended by them, I was just trying to explain that I am not naming my children after drugs or a comic book character, I didn't even know Havoc was a comic book character. I was just wondering if there was anyone else who thought these names are as awesome as I do. I guess you have to know my husband and I to understand why we love the names, they are so much more then "just words" and have great meaning to us, perfectly understandable if no one else gets it.
Thank you all for your imput, I wouldn't have posted if I didn't want to know what you really think.
MUD = Made Up Drama
Ok, so let's say you're not making this up to get a board reaction. The point everyone is trying to make with you (that you clearly seem to be missing) is that it is completely irrelevant whether you are naming them after a drug or destruction. That is what people are going to associate them with, whether that was your intention or not. Do you really not get that? They are terrible, terrible names and no one thinks they are as awesome as you do. People who meet your children for the rest of their lives are also not going to know you and your husband and therefore not get why you loved them enough to use them.
Those "names" are not awesome - at least for children. Get a puppy.
ANd your children have to live with that. I bet they change their names when they turn 18. How many times do you think they will hear "Your name is what??*snicker, snicker* Well bless your heart?" before it starts to make them insecure?
Dictionary.com must have it all wrong then. You're confusing "speed" with "Godspeed"

But that doesn't mean it is now ok to name your kid Godspeed.
Agreed. That's an issue in and of itself. My half-baked point was just to not say a simple English words means something it doesn't.

Time for some parenting lessons.
The decisions you make for your child, whether it be a name, or what activities to include them in, or how to discipling them--should not be about you. Your feelings can absolutely be taken into account, but the ultimate decision needs to be based on what is best for your child.
It doesn't matter what you think about these names. Your child is going to have to live with them. And I think we've given you enough reason as to why these names would be hard to live with. Using names just becasue YOU like them and they have special meaning for YOU, while disregarding the potential consequences for your child is selfish.
Great if you expect your kid to be a demolition expert or a stunt man.
BTW, Havoc is a Transformer.
