Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Can toddlers have flavored water?

For the past couple weeks DS has been getting a crazy diaper rash and for at least a month or so he hasn't had solid bms, they've been mush or liquid, which contributes to the rash. I stopped apple juice and it got better, he's been drinking cherry juice-always watered down-but the rash just wont quit, it'll finally go away and pop back up.

He will drink water but only out of a regular bottle with a sippy thing I bought, and even then it's not a lot. I was thinking of maybe giving him flavored water, like fruit2O or maybe Mio? Any suggestions? The only thing that helps his rash lately it Caldesene powder (zinc&talc).

  • Just curious but what makes you think the rash has anything to do with juice and/or lack of water vs. something he's eating?  I'd probably look at his food diet as much as the drinks.  As for the water I'd check to see if they have artificial sweeteners in them.

This, a lot of them are artificially sweetened, which I wouldn't want to give my kid.  I'd try super diluted juice, or water with fruit bits before that.

  • On occasion I give DD some crystal light flavored water, but I do about half or less the reccomended water to drink mix ratio, just to flavor it slightly.

  • The juice could def. be causing the loose stool, which is what is causing the rash.  I would really encourage regular water and like others said put some real fresh fruit in with the water to flavor it a little bit.  They say a child shouldn't have more than 4oz of fruit juice a day.  A child doesn't NEED fruit juice at all anyway.  I do let my son have really, really watered down apple juice once a day, but then it is just milk and water from there.  I also saw another poster mention the flavored water drinks w/o artificial sweenters (which I would NEVER let Carter have AS) and they are pretty good.  I drink them every now and again.  They are sweetened with stevia, which is a natural sweetner.  I would still ask your pedi about using those too.

  • Just put fruit in the water or plain water. And in general, do NOT give your kids AS's, for any reason, ever. I would highly highly recommend looking into artificial sweeteners and the effects it has on the human brain. Aspartame is a neurotoxin.

  • DS was having troubles with loose stools for quite a while.  Not really runny, but loose.  Our pedi suggested we start giving him a probiotic and it has helped a lot.  You may ask your dr. about that.
