Maternity Leave Question

So, if you deliver in November and your PTO starts over in Jan, how does it work? I know you have to use up your PTO before Short Term Disability kicks in. How does that work when your PTO starts over during your leave??

Re: Maternity Leave Question

  • You will have to ask your HR deparement they may prorate it once you return.  At my job all benefits go away while on leave.  For example I don't accure PTO while on leave, so any PTO I was entitled to I will never receive it starts back up once I return, and if my leave happens during open enrollment I can not participate until I return.  As for heathcare I work that through HR but it is not paid the same way it is while I am working.

  • I think it might vary by employer, since I definitely used my STD before touching PTO.  My STD started once the baby was born in Oct., then I used my PTO through the end of the year once STD cut off, and took a few weeks unpaid in Jan. without touching the PTO for the year that next year.  I'd go through your timeline carefully with HR to see what they do at your company.

  • Unfortunately that is company specific. STD, I believe, is state specific and how the company applies one before the other is their call.

  • Yep. It is company specific.

I had DD in October and got to use 2011 and 2012 PTO since my 12 weeks carried over into January.

  • I delivered 11/19, and used 8 weeks STD (c-section), then after 1/1, I used 2 weeks PTO to cover all 10 weeks of my leave.
