Ear infection?

I think my 7 month old as an ear infection. He caught a cold from daycare on Thursday and last night he was crying uncontrollably and seems to be running a slight fever.  I gave him some Tylenol today and he seemed better, but now he feels warm again.  I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but do you bring your LO to the dr for ear infections?  Or do you wait a few days to see if it goes away on its own?  What do you treat it with?  Thanks.

Re: Ear infection?

  • I would take him to the dr.  When I called an infant help line for this same problem when DS#1 was about 10 months, they suggested putting a few drops of pure olive oil in his ear then holding a warm compress over the ear for ten minutes.  The oil coated the ear canal enough that he stopped crying and I took him to the pedi first thing the next morning.  Hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Absolutey take to the doctors! Ear infections can go away on their own but if it doesn't it can cause damage not to mention why make your lo suffer for a couple of weeks (it can take that long to go away) I would go to a 24hr clinic now. They treat it with antibiotics and even the first dose or two can take the edge off right away.
  • Thanks ladies.  He's not crying now, but he was last night.  I'll take him to the dr in the morning if he looks like he's still uncomfortable.
  • DD has a cold/cough but i wasn't aware she had an ear infection until I took her to the doctor.  So even though he may not seem uncomfortable I would still take him in.  I hope he feels better.

  • Definitely head for the pedi.  We just found out DD has a double ear infection.  She had one last month, so is on stronger antibiotics now.

  • I would go to the Pedi.  My LO is on ear infection #4.

We had gone to the Dr. on a Friday for a check-up.  LO had no ear infection and was fine.  Then the following Wed. I get a call from DC that he has a really high fever.  We go to the Pedi and he has an ear infection.  He was healthy on Friday and a few days later had an ear infection.  You just never know.  Plus if it's a bad one you want to get on antibiotics.  They will most likely give you Augmentin to start.  It sucks and gives LO really bad diarrhea, which then causes nasty diaper rash, but it works.

    good luck :(

  • Garlic and Mullein oil drops in the ear works like magic. DD had a bad ear infection and it was GONE in 2 days. So many mommy friends of mine have the same experience with these drops. You can get it at Whole Foods. More and more peds are not prescribing anti biotics for ear infections. It lowers resistance to worse things later.
