Hunger Games (NBR)

For those of you that saw the movie, what did you think? Did it live up to your expectations?  Did it stay true to the book?

  • I loved it, my dh was disappointed. I think the difference is that a) I'm a harry potter and twilight fan, so I am used to viewing a movie as an adaptation, and b) its been over a yearsince I read them. Dh just read them a week ago. Visually it was spot on, jennifer lawrence was great. I think it was just missing some of the angst you get from being inside her head in the book.

This. I read them, Mr did not. He had a lot of questions that I was able to give background to.  I thought it was great and can't wait for the next ones!

  • ETA: Sorry this was so long, I guess I had more opinions on it than I had thought.

I thought it was great other than the fact that my sister was running late, then the server was running late, and we got to the IMAX theatre just as the previews were starting.  No big deal but then we had to sit on the front row, of the IMAX theatre, I started getting a headache until my eyes adjusted.  Not movie related really.

Now this may be a spoiler

spoiler, so please do not read because I don't want anyone to be mad.

I did not like that they left Madge out of the whole movie, she is the one who gave her the Mockinjay pin and I think it was important for that to be addressed but instead they did it like she bought it.  Madge did not show up to tell her goodbye and her dad didn't either.  I am just wondering how they will introduce her in the next movie if they do at all.

Beyond that I think they did an amazing job showing District 12, very detailed.  Also, the reaping was way more intense then I expected I actually started crying it was so touching.

Then in the Arena it was unbelievable but I do have to say the kids killing kids and the ones that looked no older than 12 really got to me.  It is a very touchy subject that I think they did tastefully but it still hit to the core, it was sad.

Last thing, like others have said I don't think they touched on things as much as they should, but granted the movie was already two and a half hours and I can't imagine where they could have cut from.  I did enjoy the dialogue of Snow that you didn't really get in the book, that was nice to see that angle.

Sorry if the spoilers were to much, I think I tried not to give anything away that anyoen who read the book would not know.  I will surely be taking my husband to see it when my family get's back from the cruise and someone can watch DS.

  • I enjoyed it, though its been a very long time since i read the book.  So they hit the highlights that were still in my head and i didnt mind the parts they changed.

Actually early on i read that they change the part about the pin, so i wasnt thrown by that.

I admit they Peta was totally wrong for me, i pictured him completely different and a stronger character.  Gale i didnt care for in the previews but thought he pulled it off.

Now DH didnt read the book and he thought it was dull at parts.  I admit if you weren?t already attached to the characters from reading the book than you really never got emotionally attached to any of them.  I also didn?t like that you never met a lot of the tributes but I think that was because of time and the fact that they are basically killing them off soon after.

Really? I never thought Peeta was man enough for Katniss in the books :)

I disagree. Madge's role in the first book was to give her the pin. I think that the movie didn't need an additional character with additional background info to dive into.

I think the way they handled the pin made a lot of sense.

Is Madge even in the second book? I dont really think shes a character that will be missed.

I hate that Peeta wasnt as good looking as Gale, I think that the movie portrays Gale as the guy that Katniss should be with, and I was always (and still am) Team Peeta... I wish they found a better looking guy.

Overall, I liked the adaptation, I think they did a good job of trying to fill in some of Katniss' internal dialogue about the Gamemakers and the Tracker Jackers and stuff.

Im interested in Seneca Crane, they leave it off like he is in jail/supposed to be dead - leaving him with only the berries, but he is a key player in the other books.

a question a friend and I disagreed upon: In the first book, do they show district 11 rioting after Rue's Death? I say no. All I remember is District 11 sending Katniss a parachute of bread. My friend says yes. I thought the rioting didnt begin until book 2/3?

  • I am wrong about Crane... I was confusing him with Plutarch
  • I loved it. I think they were smart to leave out most of the stuff they did. I felt like most of it was inessential to the larger story. I would have liked a bit more interaction between Katriss and Rue to show why their relationship was so special, but that's about it. I laughed every time Foxface showed up to thwart Katniss's plans, and the look on Katniss's face each time...hah that was just how I pictured it when I was reading the book. I floved all of the parts that showed all the behind-the-scenes stuff and the tv show commentary cut-ins. I think the author was so smart to write the book how she did, leaving that stuff out and only telling the story from K's perspective, so that a movie adaptation would be able to enhance the story by showing that extra stuff, offering something new to the people who were already fans of the book. So cool.

I was also really moved by the Reaping scene. I started crying when all of the other kids gave K the 3-fingered salute, and I rarely cry during movies. I'm probably going to see it again next weekend so I can catch everything I missed the first time!

Oh i was defiantly team Gale reading the books, but I always thought Peta was cleaver (coming up with the "relationship" and working with the career kids) he just seemed lost in the movie and didn?t live up to what I had in my head (also I pictured someone not so baby faced and hotter).

Movie captured the important pieces, but I felt a lack of emotional impact. I guess

Because it had to move at such a fast pace. Either that or it was just a poor matchup  bt katniss and Peeta. I was glad the fight scenes were somewhat blurred. We saw an 11pm showing and I was outraged at the number of small children at the movie. Not appropriate fOr young kids in my opinion.

Sorry for the typos, me and iPhone are not friends tonight.
