Spelling question

I think we are going to name our baby Allyson and we will call her Ally. Curious to know when you think of that name how would you spell it? I wanted to do the double L so you just drop the ...son and it spells Ally. thoughts?

Re: Spelling question

  • I prefer it to be spelled Allison/Allie. But you could still use Allison with the nickname Ally. There doesn't have to be a Y in the proper name for the nickname to have one.

  • Ally is pronounced Ah-lie (like the US and Britain were allies in WW2).

    I would go with Allison.

Allison is better suited for when she's an adult.

  • without the Y for cuteness/uniqueness
  • Allison nn Allie.

The Y looks silly. You've got to think of how this name will look on paper, resumes, business cards in the future when she's an adult.

  • I agree with PPs.  Spell it Allison and call her Allie or Ally.
  • I'm an Allison, so I'll give you the perspective of someone with the name.

No matter how you spell it, it will get misspelled her whole life.  I am okay with that though because my parents went with the traditional spelling (Allison).

My parents called me Allie (with "ie") for most of my childhood, until I hit a tomboy phase at 8 and demanded no one call me Allie anymore.  At 12ish it became cool to be cute and girly again and I thought "Y" was more fun than "ie" so I became Ally...which is what most people still call me today.  Professionally I like the option of Allison though.  Allie with "ie" is way better.

    Short version:  Allison/Allie
