June 2011 Moms

LOs poop

When we started introducing LO to solids/purees, she became REALLY constipated. Her poo was rock hard and in chunky/pebble-y (ok not a word, but you get it). I realized i was giving her too much of certain foods (bananas, sweet potatoes) that was causing this, so I changed her diet up some, introduced some new foods, and it softened up, but was still, um ploppable as CD mommas would say.

She's now eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with about 4 additional 6oz bottles a day (probably only eats 4-5oz at a time, but I offer it to her). Anyways, her poo has gone back to being total mush. Breakfast and dinner are finger foods, and lunch is usually cereal of some sort.

Why would purees make her constipated, but with solids she's back to mush? Is it just because purees were new to her and her digestive tract at the time? Could too much fruit be doing it to her? (She does eat 2 fruits with breakfast)

Im just wondering what it SHOULD look like and if it's ok that she's 10months (tomorrow) and her poo isn't solid yet. Should I be giving her more fiber?

  • Was she getting fruits as purees and still having the solid poops? Martin is pretty much solely on purees and his poo is slightly mushy but definitely firmer than pure BM/FF poos.

  • Yeah! Shes had pears, apples, blueberries, bananas, peaches... All as purees first. The only thing off the top of my head that she DIDN'T have as a pur?e first, would be strawberries. But she doesn't have them everyday, and her poo is ALWAYS mushy.

Its not as liquidy as BM poo, and it never changed after I switched her over to Formula. I was just changing her the other day and was wondering why the change and if other Mommas noticed a change as well

  • My LO's eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner and 5-6 bottles/boob time each day.  Her poop is peanut butter consistency and plops in the toilet.  A few times she has had poop with a definite shape and somewhat pebbley.  I stopped giving her bananas and cheese daily and went to every other or every 3rd day. That helped a bit. I also add ground flax to the purees I give her and into her yogurt. Flax ups the fiber and protein content in her food. It also has a bit of added iron.
  • Oo, duh, flax seed! That's a great idea! I gave it to LO once because we were at my moms and she had it out, but I never thought to get some for our house.

LO hasn't had any dairy products yet, her Pedi recommends to wait until a year... So that's been our plan. So she hasn't had cheese or yogurt.

Aren't bananas supposed to bind them up? She does eat bananas often... Hmmm
