need nanny rate for high COL area.....

We're just outside of boston.. and I think we've found the perfect nanny. I don't want to overpay, but I don't want to lose this one... whats your best guess per hour? Live-out, about 40-45 hrs a week. I put 10-15 on the ad, and I asked her what she expected... she said 18-20, however, this was 3 separate jobs (all part-time). So, she'd be with us, full-time instead.

Re: need nanny rate for high COL area.....

  • No idea, although 10-12 def sounds low, in a midlevel COL area I had sitters who had nannies who got 12.

I think including some paid time off/holidays and some other sort of benefit could cushion if you paid on the lower end? Maybe compromise at 16 and give her paid time off or something.

  • I used to help out a family in Brookline, Ma after work (teacher), picking up their son from daycare, bringing him home, getting him dinner and ready for bed.  They paid 18.

My friend still lives in the area and will not babysit/nanny for less than 20 an hour.  She is able to get it, so it is what she charges.

In that area, 18-20 is pretty common, but she did respond to your ad where you said 10-15, so I would talk with her.  Say what you are comfortable paying, but also ask what it would take to keep her and go from there.  If she really does need a bit more, is there another family you know of that you could nanny share with?  Or would you be comfortable trying to find a family you could do that with?  Good luck!

  • This past summer I was paid $18 an hour to watch a 1 year old in Lexington/Bedford. A lot of jobs posted on sittercity were in the $15 to $20 range. If I drove around a lot during the week I was also given some gas money.

  • I pay $15/hr for 2 kids in MCOL (Atlanta).  I would expect to pay $18/hr for 3 kids here, so $18-20/hr sounds reasonable in a HCOL area to me.

  • I live right outside of Boston too, and $18-20 is the going rate. Maybe she would take a little less if it was full time (if she is available and just needs more money so she charges more an hour), but be prepared. I know people that pay up to $25 an hour, so 18-20, esp. if she is very qualified, really isn't that bad. GL

  • Oh wait-I just saw from your tickers that you have 3 kids (or will soon). IMO, if you really like her, take the $18-20 rate. That is pretty good for 3 kids.

  • From our friends with nannies...40-50K/year for 1 kid, 2 kids is 60K+.  In or immediately outside of Boston.  $15-20/hr sounds about right.  (I haven't done the math.)

Still less expensive than day care in the area for 3 kids!

  • We pay $650 a week for 47.5 hours and I live outside of NYC.  We only have DS though, so I guess adding 2 kids would make it more.
