Working Moms

*Lurker* Sleep question for a 9/10 month old

DD is not getting enough sleep, and I do not know what the solution is.

Here is our day:

5:30A - DH and I get up for our day

6:30A - I leave for work w/ DD

7:30A - get to DDs DC for drop off

... She will usually take 2 naps for them, about an hour each.

5:30P - pick up DD from DC and head home.

6:30P - We arrive home ... DH usually gets home 15 minutes or so later.

DD goes down for bed between 7-8PM

I wake DD up as late in the morning as I can to give her a bottle and get her dressed, then we head out.  I get her to bed as early as I can after a bath and a bottle.  But she still is tired when I get her up in the morning, she falls asleep on the car ride to DC and on the ride home in the afternoon.

What do the other working moms who commute do to help their LOs get enough sleep at night?  She is great on the weekends, but she really needs more sleep during the week.

Re: *Lurker* Sleep question for a 9/10 month old

  • What a bummer!  It seems given your current work schedules, you are doing the best you can to maximize her sleep time.

Can you and your husband adjust your schedules slightly (you go into work later and leave later, he go in early and leave early to pick up the baby in the afternoon) to maximize her morning sleep?  This may not be an option if he doesn't work near the daycare... but if it continues, maybe pick a new daycare closer to your house?

  • DHs schedule is pretty set ... I could go in later & come home later, but that would probably just make matters worse.  Going in earlier isn't an option at my job, and once I give up my 8A-5P schedule, it will be impossible to get it back.

I'm N Texas also ... we live in Arlington, I work in Irving & DH works in Dallas.  We used to live in Irving, so this wasn't a problem.  I've kept her DC & Pedi in Irving so far ... I may look around and see if there is a DC I like in Arlington that is opens early enough and closes late enough that we could switch.  I'm sure 7A-6P hours wouldn't be hard to find, but I worry about the days that traffic makes the commute longer.  And it would be hard being so far away from her during the day.  Right now I can pop over to the DC anytime throughout the day.

  • So she sleeps around 10 hours at night, 2 at DC and 2 on the way to/from DC?  That actually sounds normal to me.  I have the same schedule with a nanny at home, so I don't think you need to worry too much.  Take sleep wherever you can get it, even if it's in the car.

  • I think that seems pretty normal- it's probably hard for her to stay awake in the car for a whole hour (that seems like a long time to expect a baby to stay awake in their carseat).

DD has the same sleep times as yours, minus the car rides, FWIW!

  • Are there any other indicators that she isn't getting enough sleep?  Is she grumpy during the day?  Our LO is super clingy and has an even shorter attention span (9 months) when he's tired - in addition to being grumpy.

If it's truly a sleep deprivation issue, it may get better around the year mark when they drop to 1 nap a day.  So that may be comforting.  Maybe you should also look into having someone come to your home to watch LO so that she can be on her own sleep schedule.
