??Ear Infection??

My mom thinks my 7 month old has an ear infection...I don't know. I looked it up online, but I'm still not sure...For the past week, she has been pulling at her ear which she never does--and more importantly, she has been crying when I put her down for bedtime which she never does anymore and she wakes up periodically during the night crying (which she doesn't do anymore) and I know she not hungry b/c I even tried to feed her once and she drank hardly anything (she would guzzle the whole bottle if she were hungry). I just have to let her cry-it-out b/c she just get more upset when I leave the room after I try to console her. I should note the her mommy (me) and daddy both just got over the flu the week before and she didn't get the flu, but was obviously not herself (maybe a cold?)...she had her flu shot about 2 weeks prior so I think that helped her a little. Any advice? Does this sound like and ear infection? She so happy during the day, though, so I'm not sure!!

Re: ??Ear Infection??

  • I would get it checked out. DD just got over an ear infection. Her ped said that not sleeping well and ear tugging can be signs/symptoms of an ear infection. My daughter had a fever with hers which was why I brought her in, but she also woke crying a few times (which she never does at night) the couple nights before. Also an ear infection is just caused by fluid from another possible bug going into the middle ear - so even though she didn't get the flu she may have picked something up.

For me it's worth the co-pay even if it turns out to be nothing and I am way over the FTM stigma.

  • I would definitely bring her to the pedi. DS has had 2 ear infections, and both started with a cold. He was really crabby, and really only wanted to be held. He would start crying when we put him down, even on the changing table, which he usually loves. Even if it's not, you will feel better having it checked out.
  • Thanks for your help. I guess I should definitely take her in, especially considering we don't have a co-pay or anything. It sounds all too coincidental that we had the flu and she had a minor version of what we had, I guess you could say, and then all of a sudden this happens...I just get worried she'll pick something else up at the docs office, especially since it'll be on a sat. at the urgent care...i'm probably just worrying too much about that, though
  • We took DD to the pediatrician yesterday b/c her cough was getting worse.  She was diagnosed with an ear infection...but at least she gets the bubble gum medicine.  I hope your LO feels better but I would take her in.  We had no inclination of an ear infection.  She wasn't pulling at her ears.

Exactly this.  She would scream unless being held.  All weekend, we would take shifts holding her overnight.  DD had a double ear infection when we brought her in this morning.
