Daycare Dilemma

So, my DS is 1 year old.  I went back to work at 4 months and ever since he has been with an in home daycare and is one of three children (ages 3 years, 17 months and him at 1 year).  He has always done great there and never cried when I left.  He is always super excited to see our sitter and go to the house in the morning.  We received notice a week ago from her that she will be closing because her family is moving due to her husband's job relocating.  I have been research different options for him 1. Daycares 2. other in home daycares 3. a nanny.  Since my DS is a year, I always thought a traditional daycare would be better for the socialization, etc.  Today I did a trial at a daycare in the area.  He had such a rough day!! I didn't even imagine it would be that hard for him! First, he freaked out when I left and cried and cried.  I called an hour or two later and could hear him crying in the background.  I stopped in at lunch (shouldnt have done this!!! I didnt realize he would react like this) and he was super clingy, not wanting to be put down and kept kissing me.  Then he freaked and cried again when I left.  When I came to pick him up, he ran over to me and wouldnt let go.  It was soo pitiful...I have NEVER seen him like this.  In fact, we have had sitters watch him and relatives that he barely seems and he was fine. The dilemma I am now facing is: 1. should i enroll him at this daycare and see how he does with the hopes that he will adjust and it will get better? 2. find a smaller inhome daycare since he did so well at the one he was at? 3. find a nanny.

I would really like him to be around children since I know he needs the socialization.  However, he is soo used to getting A LOT of attention I am afraid the daycare setting is somewhat of a shock to him.  He is having a hard time adjusting.  Thoughts??

Re: Daycare Dilemma

  • my first though is he needs time to get use to his providers...every so often our LO will not let leave and will cry even though she has been there 5 months

  • I used to be a preschool teacher and some children have a really rough time adjusting. I guess he needs some time. My friend's daughter is 18 months and went to day care for the first time on Tuesday. She had a really rough day. The next day Grandma went to pick her up before nap time and she didn't want to leave...she was having too much fun!!

  • Your baby probably needs more time to adjust.  I would try it out for a while before you decide not to do it.
Also, I teach Pre-K and I had one student at the beginning of the year cry all day long...literally.  She did that for 2 weeks and she was 3.  Some kids just need to get used to their surroundings before they relax and have fun.

And I'm sure you already decided this, but I would not go back on lunch break unless it is to watch him without him seeing you.

    Good luck!
