Has anyone gotten pregnant under these conditions?

1. You are breastfeeding (but feed solids too).

2. You bedshare and nurse throughout night.

3. You have NOT had a PP period yet.

I meet all of these criteria, and DH and I are hoping to start trying again in a few months.  However, I don't think I want to wean before a year or stop bedsharing.  So, I know this will make it very difficult to conceive.

For those who have gotten pregnant, was there a method to when you BD'ed or is it just a crapshoot?

TIA!

  • Thanks for posting this!  I was wondering the same thing!  I am EBFing and bedsharing also.  Not TTC but (sorry TMI) condoms make sex uncomfortable to the point of me not wanting to do it, and I'm too paranoid to start the progesterone pill for fear of losing supply!  Right now we're just using the good old "pull and pray" and hoping for the best!  Not smart considering that's how we got DS :) who is now 4 months! <3

  • Like mel said, pregnancy causes a really sharp supply drop for some women. There isn't anything you can do about it if it happens to you - you just have to supplement formula. So if you're trying to get pregnant before you're ready to wean, know that it's a possible outcome.

Once you are ready to TTC, charting and possibly night-weaning (or if you're apart in the day, that will do it too if you're not pumping - just a 6 hour window of not bfing).

  • Same here!  I really want to be pregnant before September (I'll turn 40 then), but so far, no signs of fertility at all.  I thought about temping, but getting a 3 hour stretch of sleep and waking at the same time to temp would be a crapshoot.  If I still don't have a PP AF by the time V hits a year, I think we will try Jay Gordon's night weaning method to see if the red queen will make an appearance.
I hope a few more people will respond to your post.  I'm super curious!

  • Only 1 and 2 apply to me, but I wanted to post because AF "shouldn't" have come back for me, yet it did. So, you just never know when your fertility could return. GL to you!

This is me.  And I conceived with only a 9 day LP.  However if you want to keep BFing until a year I would wait.  Not only can your supply drop (mine definitely did) but the taste can change and some babies become uninterested.  So far my DD is sticking it out but she was over a year when I conceived.

  • Thanks to everyone for their replies.  i actually pulled out my copy of TCOYF and read the section on charting while BF'ing.    i am confused how to do it bc the FF software asked for the date of my last AF, which was back in Nov 2011.  Do I use that date?

I think you'd use the day you gave birth.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  I didn't start charting until AF showed at 7mos PP.

  • 3 of my friends/co-workers had their second kids under these conditions, though they weren't ttc.

FWIW I was concerned about supply with the mini ppill it started it at six months pp with no noticeable drop. I posted about my concern here and that seemed to be the consensus. But, I do notice a drop right before my period. I've only had two since LO was born. The first was in December and the second was just a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the info! :)  I'm still holding off :P  Call me paranoid...  Sex hurts enough now that I think that is birth control in itself! haha  But in all seriousness, I think I'll try once he gets on some solid foods, that way if my supply drops, it won't be as much of a problem.

  • YES to 1 and 2.

    However, no to 3.

We were still bf'ing and bed-sharing/night nursing, however, it was 2 months after I had gotten my period back (which didn't return until 16 months PP)

  • Yes, Yes, No- I did have 1 AF.  I do know women who happened to catch the first ovulation and became pg before PP AF.

ACAsomeday- I love your sig picture.  SO adorable.  Wish I thought to get a shot like that =)

  • kellymom.com has some good info on BF and fertility as well. If I remember correctly it says there will often be a anovulatory "warning" period if your periods return sooner, but the longer you go without your period the more likely you are to ovulate before your first pp period...

We got pg after the second pp period (my first was when DS was 15 mo). My first cycle was longer than normal, so DS was close to 18 mo when we got pg. We were not TTC, but not preventing. I was still expecting my cycles to be anovulatory. I started spotting about 2 weeks after my 2nd period... turns out it was ovulatory bleeding!! DS was still BS/nursing several times at night. My supply dried up during the 2nd trimester, but DS continued to nurse. Now we are tandem nursing... which hasn't been the easiest thing :)
