How to transition to sippy?

With DD approaching 10 months- I feel like I should start working on switching from bottles to sippy.  She drinks water from the sippy fine during meals, but I'm not sure how to just switch a bottle to a sippy.

I was thinking about taking her afternoon bottle and turning it into sippy + snack... so instead of 6oz of formula in a bottle, I'd give her 4oz of formula in a sippy plus a little snack (I'm figuring she won't drink as much from a sippy).  Once that was working, I could start working on some of the other bottles...

Has anyone done this yet?  How did you do it?  I definitely don't want to make her hungry if she doesn't drink enough from the sippy....

Re: How to transition to sippy?

  • I would do exactly what you said - put in a small amount of forumla in and see how it goes.  If she has water down I'm sure she'll do great with formula

  • When A was super congested a few weeks ago we tried a sippy on a whim since he wouldnt take a bottle. He took it like a champ. We started offering it occasionally with no real pattern (usually 1 or 2 sippy cups a day). Then I set a date and went no bottle. He has had no problem. He actually wants more now that he is using a sippy cup.

So glad I dont have to deal with the Dr. Brown's bottles anymore.

I would just see how she reacts to the sippy cup. Avery loved having his milk in his sippy and that really helped.

  • We haven't started replacing bottles with sippy yet, but sometimes he won't take a bottle.  So, I put the formula in the sippy cup with a straw and he'll drink it right down.  It may be easier than you think since she is already taking water!

  • What you said sounds like a great idea, just add a little formula.  I personally don't have much advice as we have tried about 5 different types of sippy cups with no luck at all, water or formula.  I asked his dr. and he said aim for 14 months.  I am aiming for 12 but we will see how it goes.

    Good Luck to you thought!

Have you tried the playtech one that has a straw and you squeeze?  It helps them understand better that the fluid does travel up.  We've been using that one and DD is slowly getting.  At first she would look at me like I was trying to poison her or something, now she'll tolerate a few squeezes and suck up a tiny bit occasionally.
