June 2011 Moms

Am I too relaxed about this or should I be mad?

Today LO was at the sitter and when I came in the sitter told me that he got hurt today.  The sitter watches one 6 month old, LO, and one 22 month old.  She took them all for a walk today.. she puts the two little ones in the double stroller and takes the older one by the hand when they walk.  Well they were all getting cranky so she took them back to the house.  She picked up LO and had the older 22 month old by the hand.  Then supposedly the 22 month old started to have a tantrum and started to pull away from her.  Sitter was afraid she was going to run into the street so she sat LO down on the driveway at the bottom of her house front steps to get control of the 22 month old.  She does not have a grassy yard nearby. Then LO lost his balance (which he does do time to time when he gets overly excited and kicks his legs) and fell over and scraped up his little face.  He has "road rash" down his left cheek and above his lip.

While the sitter was telling me this she was crying.. she obviously felt really bad.  I already texted a pic of it to DH so he wouldn't be surprised when he got home.  He'll probably be pissed.  I guess I feel like given the circumstances, she did the best she could.  I would rather LO's little face have little scratches on it than 22 month old get hit by a car by running into the road.

WDYT?  Am I being too relaxed???

Edit:  He's been acting his total normal happy self since I got home with him.  It doesn't seem to be bothering him.

  • meh. obviously the sitter felt really bad and LO is fine. if it was a chain of similar events i would be pissed, but accidents happen.

  • Oh poor Jacob!  I think you handled it well, I know you trust her, and like pp said, accidents happen.

  • I agree-accidents happen. It sounds like your sitter did her best to diffuse the situation, and it stinks that your LO got scraped up :(

If your LO would have been at a daycare center or school, an incident report would probably have been written.  I'd just make sure to make a note of when/how it happened and save that picture, just on the off chance that a similar event would ever happen (and it probably never will).

  • I agree with pps...accidents happen.  I'd be more concerned if it were happening like everyday/several times a day.  But considering how she said it happened, I don't think I'd be too upset.

  • i think you've reacted appropriately.  it doesn't sound like negligence, and there's no reason to stress out your DS worrying about it.  just let him know you still think he's the cutest thing on earth.

  • I don't think you or your DH should be mad about it. Accidents happen. Reed gets excited and falls all.the.time....usually backwards, and I'm sitting right there with him!

Babies at this age are bound to get some bumps and scrapes.

  • Yes

    Exactly. Yes

  • I wouldn't be too upset.  I think the sitter made the right choice and LOs are going to get bumps and brusies and scraps from time to time.  My aunt was watching DS2 a few months ago and started to fall off the bed (after a diaper change) she caught him before he hit the floor but not before he scraped his face on the night stand.  I didnt get pissed with her so I doubt I'd get pissed with a sitter, especially one who was trying to keep a nearly 2 year old from running into the street (since I have a 2 year old and know how hard it is to manage both of them sometimes.)

This. Accidents happen to every baby. It doesn't sound like negligence to me. I would just make note of it.

  • It wouldn't bother me either.  They are kids.  They're going to get scraped up and it's not like she was being neglectful or purposefully hurt your LO.  I feel like a lot of kids are too coddled these days.  A few scratches was the least of my worries when I was a kid.  I constantly had scabbed knees and scrapes everywhere.

  • eh. Things happen. Kids get hurt. I think your reaction is fine
  • Thanks ladies.  DH and I went out to dinner tonight and had a long conversation about it.  DH of course was worried about it but I reminded him of how many times we've both done something like bumped his head against the side of the bath when he's lost his balance.  Or when the dog knocked him over... that accidents happen and it wasn't from neglect.  DH still has the "well she should have had a better plan taking both kids out of the stroller at once" opinion.  That may have been, but I have no doubt she'll try a different route next time.  I asked him if he wants to pull DS out of daycare and find somewhere new and of course he's like "welll no... there's nothing I could do before Monday anyway."  I think he needs to cool off a bit and he'll get over it.  I think what PP said about documenting the incident is a good idea.  We'll make sure to do that.

And yes, I totally agree that kids will be getting bumps and scrapes.  It's part of being a kid!  I don't want my son (or daughter if that was the case) to be a wuss.  I see too many of those kids at work. LOL

  • Eh...I see no problem here.  I personally think accidents happen and it could have been worse but it wasn't.  Hopefully with this situation she maybe trys a different avenue next time.  However, I am sure it may come down to fast decisions for me as well when I have 2 children.  You handled it perfectly.
