Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How much formula?

I finished weaning DD a week ago.

She is 7 mos old, eats solids twice a day.

She currently gets 5 bottles a day, 8 oz at 4 am, then 6 oz four more times, for a total of 32 oz.

She has gained A POUND in one week on formula!!!! When BF, her average weight gain was 4 oz a week, her max was 7 oz in one week.

How much formula does your LO drink?  Am I overfeeding DD?  I don't want to end up with an overweight baby!

Re: How much formula?

  • DD drinks 15oz per day. I think you might be overfeeding her a little bit but it depends on your LO.

  • My Little guy eats 20-24 oz. a day. But he also gets cereal twice a day and solids twice as well.  If you worried just ask the pediatrician if thats too much.
  • I was worried about the same thing...my LO is 6 1/2 months....he eats solids 3 times a day and we are on seconds(the bigger ones) now.  He gets 5 bottles a day, two 7oz and three 5oz....so about 29oz total...maybe a little less cause he doesn't always finish.  I don't think you are over feeding...if they are hungry go ahead and feed them....well at least that is my thought process....they are hungry for a reason...

  • Right now we only do solids once a day, but she typically eats 25-30 ounces a day.

I think it depends on the baby - how much they weigh, do they need to eat in the middle of the night, how much solids, etc...

If she is willing to drink all the ounces and isn't spitting up, I think you are fine.  You can always try to offer her an ounce less and see if she is still hungry for more when that is finished.

  • Just talked to the ped. They said 24 oz  a day, def no more than 30.  Time to cut back.  My poor little piggy is gonna be hungry ... LOL

Really? I'd question that. DD eats 25-35 ounces per day, depending on the day. I asked the pediatrician about it and he said you should feed them if they are hungry and 35 ounces is totally normal.

Honestly, it's crazy that people would feed they infants less than what the infant wants because they don't want them to get fat or "overweight".

This.  They are growing.  Their bodies are craving the calories for a reason.  Its not like you are stuffing them with chips or cookies.  Once they start being more mobile and running around their bodies will burn calories.  DD eats baby food 2 times a day and drinks 3-4 bottles between 7-9 oz per day (24 hours).  She doesnt finish the food or bottle if shes "full". Its quite easy to tell if your infant has had enough to eat vs wants more food/milk.

Yeah, honestly, I don't know where I stand on this issue.  I know I could personally eat all day long and weigh 300 lbs rather than the 130 that I currently weigh (which is a normal weight for me).  So, I'm not sure it's good to feed an infant as much as they can eat, either.   All I do know is that she typically only gained 4-5 oz a week while breastfeeding and she gained at least 10 oz in the first week of 100% formula - that's why I was questioning how much I was feeding her.

  • I've been wondering the same thing, and here's what I think now after reading these posts.  You are not going to find a "normal" amount.  Go with you baby's cues.  If you LO stops drinking, and seems uninterested, stop the bottle.  Same with solids.  I was thinking that our son was eating too much, and just last night our nanny though he may still be hungry after finishing his 6 tsp of oatmeal with a little fruit.  So, I listened to her and gave him more.  A lot more!  He just kept wanting more!  He was definitely still hungry after the 6 tsp. and it was me who was stuck on giving him just that amount.

He's 6.5 months, 28" long, and 18.9pounds.  Not overweight at all.  He takes between 27-32 oz of formula a day, oatmeal and fruit twice a day, and a big jar of veggies in the middle of the day.  We've noticed a slight slow down in his formula intake, and think he's making a transition to a little less formula and more solids. We started solids with him at 4.5 months, so he's a pro with them now, and can't get enough.

  • OP, I think the advice you got from your pedi is highly questionable. These are infants we're talking about here; if they're hungry, it's because their bodies need more food. The more active your baby gets, the more calories they need to function. I've seldom come across a pedi who would suggest cutting back on formula for an infant unless they were approaching 40 oz a day (the point at which formula can begin to become toxic to a baby). It's ridiculous to be concerned about an overweight baby at this stage.

How often and how many ounces of solids is your LO getting throughout the day? Does she eat any finger foods in addition to purees?

At this age, anywhere between 25 and 35 ounces of formula can be considered "normal". If she's not spitting up a lot after her feedings, you are most definitely not overfeeding her. If you are truly concerned about the amount of formula she drinks, up her solids intake. Whatever you do, please don't cut back on all of her food simply to keep her weight in check (unless of course, she's already off the charts in terms of weight and your pedi has sited specific concerns in this regard).
